Hood weight

I have an '03 GT, can someone inform me on how much the stock hood actually weighs?

I just spent an hour searching hood/weight reduction forums and have been unable to find this; I probably just suck at searching.

Appreciate the patience.

This is the hood i bought 2 years ago. This is the info off of there page.

This is a 1999-2004 Mustang Fiberglass 3” Cowl Induction hood. The hood has a smooth gel coat finish. The hood is equipped with a front and rear metal latch plates. The steel plates are powdercoated to minimize rust and corrosion. Simply transfer your oem hardware over for an original feel. These are some the features that separates CarbonWare hoods from its competitors. The hoods are composed of several layers of high grade quality fiberglass and resin.

Direct Bolt On
Great weight reduction (28lbs, oem weight is 37 lbs!)
Rise height (clearance) 3"
Front & Rear metal latch plates
Smooth gel coat finish
High quality fiberglass and resin

I'll be finding out real soon what the stock hood weighs? I just purchased a HO Fibertrends 2.5 cowl. It only ways 22 lbs and seems to be about half the weight of the stock hood. It is a noticeable difference in lifting up both hoods. I will be taking off the stock hood in a day or two and I will weigh and post the results.

It weighs around 40 lbs...

I've taken mine off ti replace with another.

The hoods on the 99-04's (all) are fiberglass. They are not high grade fiberglass, but lighter than steel. If you don't have any performance mods done, or are not planning on drag racing, the only real reason for a lighter hood would be for appearence (ie carbon fibre). As I see that both of your cars are convertibles, I wouldn't recommend the drag racing...

Haha

Good advice.

I'm just trying to educate myself before I come home and start on the car and it seems that there's a lot to be gained from weight reduction. Save twenty pounds with a $500+ hood though? I don't know.

The lack of performance mods, yeah sadly enough, I've had my GT since August 2006, I believe and I haven't driven it since, except for 32 days of leave.

Just like everyone else with my post count though, 'I PLAN to modify blah blah blah . . .'.

You can get similar weight saving with performance seats and you get the added benefit of it holdin you in much better. I had a fixed back sparco in my old vw i autocrossed for fun and damn did they hold you in. They are alot more comforatable as well. Im debatin on whether to go for seats or a hood for xmas. And dont forget if you get a fiberglass hood its gonna cost you around $500 to get it painted as on top of the hood itself.

Yeah I didn't even think about the painting, and carbon fiber is so expensive.

Thanks man.

Carbon fiber can be run unpainted and not look as tacky as a primed hood if you wanted to wait a lil, but yeah the seats seem like a better deal. Just looking brackets the tend to be a lil pricey.

I was lucky and picked mine up from a guy in Cali for $250. I have left it white so far until I figure out what bumper I am going to buy. Then I will just get the front end painted.

The CF is good, but if you're gonna run it unpainted, make sure you gel coat it so it doesn't get brittle and fade.

Fiberglass is just about as strong, and not much heaver, plus a lot cheaper.

But the seats are a REALLY good idea. I hate the seats in mine, but I have a lowly unmoddified 3.8L, and I really can't see spending a lot on it...

Thanks for Serving BTW! What branch and unit are you in? I work for Defence Logistics Agency, so some parts I manage may go on the vehicles / weapons / expendables you use!

Most quality carbon fiber pieces are gel coated and i would make sure mine was.

You loses the cost savings after paint.

I dont think they weigh very much, I had no prob swapping hoods from my 99 and 01 by myself at all, I dont think they were no 40 pounds either felt more like 25 maybe, I am rather skinny and dont have much arm strenght but didnt seem like much weight at all though.
