Ticking noise
So heres the deal. I am hoping someone can give me some direction or know what is going on.
Okay I have a 2000 mustang with a 4.6 liter motor that is completly stock. Now when I start the car it runs normally no sounds until I accelarate. The only time I hear the ticking is when the rpms are around 2,500 to 3,000 this happens during decelaration as well. Other than that it hasnt got worst and it has been a couple thousand miles. My performance has not been affected either. TIA |

The DPFEwicth is the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR switch. My car is doin somthin similar. It is throwin the code P0401. That switch goin bad is what is causing it. I have also heard of fuel injectors making a tick sound. Can you tell where in the engine bay it is coming from?

Does it happen only when you're driving or can you duplicate the noise in neutral revving?

I tell you what take a rubber hose (preferablly a radiator type) and place it around where you think you hear the sound and tell us what you hear. Also try different areas around the engin to see if you can tell where its commin from.

does the rate of ticking increase with rpm in the range indicated? or is it steady within the range? Is it metalic or plastic sounding?
perhaps a valve isn't happy and in that rpm range it just happens to be the right harmonic to let it tick. |

Did you change it or did someone else change it? How did the hose thing come out?

well i brought it somewhere and had them use synthetic oil. I think the noise is coming from the right sid valve cover. This may seem like a stupid question but if infact it is coming from the valve or valves and i decide to get some new heads this should fix the problem?

It maybe the timing chain. Ford had problems with the tensioners going bad, causing the chain to wear through the guides faster than normal. I had that problem.
