Im thinkin about getting a turbocharger

I have an '02 mustang GT and im wanting to do a quick boost in power so im considering a turbo kit...

But ive read a few places that it could tear up your engine if it isnt built for it... could a stock 4.6l v8 (stock for my car) handle it?

Im sure it could. but im here for advice

it can handle some very mild boost, but eehy spend the cash for the turbo setup when you cant take advantage of it. juts throw in a supercharger. cheaper and will make just as much power on your motor as you will with the turbo. the stock internals seem to die around 400-425 hp. you can put a supercharger on it and get 400 rwhp easily. so why spend the cash, if ya cant take advantage of the reasons for using tubo

Truthfully I'm not sure if a turbo charger is any cheaper or more expensive then a super charger . But I do know they are both expensive up-grades. Your stock 4.6L will benefit from such an up-grade, but you will not be able to extract the full potential from either kit with a stock 4.6L engine. That does not mean the up-grade would not be a good choice, just you would have to limit the power to keep the engine from hurting itself. Later on, when time and funds prove handy, you could up-grade your engine internals to better and more robust parts and then expel the true potential from your turbo or blower. I would say most that run a blower or turbo are others in your same position, where they detune the kit to fit there needs and later do the up-grades necessary for full bore performance. just remember that running your engine at full tilt without any internal up-grades is a temporary improvement at best, for it's just a matter of time till something breaks.

^ Yeah i see... well, first off ima get some gears and maybe an intake (as they are quite cheap)... i want my stang to last a long time but i also want to enjoy it (i love racing)... if i were to get the turbo kit without getting new enging parts (for the time being) and race with it, how much would it hurt? never changing your oil is very harmful... is a turbo kit along the lines of not changing oil? (in terms of wear and tear?)

also, im more familiar with turbo kits... so im picking that instead of a supercharger... what im asking is... with is better, safer, and cheaper in the long run (part replacements etc)

thanks

the kits that are made specificly for the mustangs are made for a stock bottom end unless otherwise posted and wont harm the motor. there are a couple of mustangs around here with blowers puttin down 390-430at the wheels and drive them everyday and have close to 100k on them without a problem. you just have to watch the amount of boost that you put into them and make sure you have a good tune for the boost.

so what is a safe amount of boost on a stock 4.6? and what internals would need to be changed to up that boost safely?

400rwhp is a good number on a stock block. but its all in the tune. need to go with forged crank, rods and pistons

Some of the things that id need to change would be
- Pistons
- Crank
- Rocker Arms?
- Rods

could someone give me a list? doesnt have to be right on, just a list of the parts that usually screw up..
