Really Disappointed with autometer gauges!
I installed some autometer phantom II gauges this weekend, a final step of the Novi 2000 install. So I light em up to make sure they work and its all good only they look nothin like the animation on autometers website. Auto Meter - Gauges as youll see they show the gauges as white face unlit and black faced wit white numbering when lit. I love the way the gauges changed colors liek that. How ever in actuality when they are lit the gauges gauges are just as white as when the are off! I was actually thinkin about redoin my whole dash with these cuz I liked the some much but now see that they are so far from what I though that will never happen.
p.s. damnit why cant I edit my thread title to correct my stupidity!

wow thats dumb. On the website it says nighttime view so maybe its only when there is no sunlight hitting them or something. Beats me i have the cobalt series gauges tho.

I did turn em on once it was dark out to make sure. Autometer did reply to my emial already and requested a pic and stated there may be somethin wrong wit my guages. Ill take pics tonight and post em here as well so you guys know what I mean. While this is upsetting autometers timely response is comforting, hopefully they will be upstanding and settle this. I may just have to send a link to this forum so they know how far this will go.

I'm running Autometer Phantom II boost and fuel pressure gages because they matched my other back lit gages. They preform exactly as advertised. White when a light is shinning on them. Black when there's no light. If I turn on the lights during the day, they stay white.

do they just not look like you expected or they dont work? It almost looks like they dont light up....kinda like the background just changes black. How does it change to black at night?

They light up but that background is still white at night. I was expecting it to be black from what they show on their site.

Daytime picture in my garage. I didn't think about a night time picture. I'll see if I can get one tonight.
The Phantom II gages are back lit gages. They turn black at night because of the absence of light. If you turn the headlights on during the day the face stays white. At night, the light behind the gage face lights up the numbers. At night, if you were to shine a flashlight on the gage it would again be white. Attached is an ad from RMPOutlet (I do not recomment buying from them.). It accurately shows what the Phantom II gage looks like during the day (white) and at night with the headlights on (black with numbers lit). AUTO METER PHANTOM II SERIES HIGH-PERFORMANCE GAUGES FREE SHIPPING!

I thought about that when I was looking at the different Autometer gauges. The numbers when the Phantom II is white looks a little cluttered for my taste (outlined block type). I went with the Ultralite II series and have no complaints. Clear, simple, and easy to see but still has the "thru dial" lighting (a night and day mode). On a side note, I put a single small toggle switch on my pillar to shut of all of the pillar gauge lights if I don't want them on at night for what ever reason.

I only had my camera phone to take pics wit so they arent the best quality. They are even whiter than they look in the pics.
I was playing around with them a lil last night and I can get them darker but at that point I cant see the instrument cluster very well. As you can see they are alot brighter. Eagle howd you wire yours up? they look to be closer to the same level.

The tuner who installed my supercharger wired them. They are brighter than the rest of the gages but their location makes them less distracting. Since you can dim your lights, you probably have them wired correctly. If you have an electronics store nearby, you could put a resistor on the wire going to the lights to drop the voltage a little.

So Autometer got back to me. It turns out they get these response every now and then. The back lighting doesnt not light the actually face but depending on the surroundings and how bright the lights are set will the appearence wil differ. I still think they need a better representation of the actual product but I think I can make it work fairly well for my application.
