Changing water pump
Well I have had this stewart water pump for a while and finally went to install it. I drove to work, snagged my tools and started digging into my car. I had everything out and ready to swap the pumps, but couldn't pull the old pump out. I tried and tried and fuck it is in there good. How do I pull a water pump out? Is there a special tool needed? Would I be better off just dropping it off at a shop/dealership and having them change it for me?

im glad I know this now, after I put it all back together and came back home. At work, "persuasion with a hammer" means beating the living shit out of something, how much effort should it take to get it out? How much force to put it back in? I am not an auto mechanic, this is actually my first car I have worked on (not the first time I have worked on it) so I am in somewhat unfamiliar territory. Anyone reading this, I have a tip for you; When taking off the pulley for the water pump, leave the belt on, because that last bolt will kick your ass. Damn, now I am tempted to go back to work and give it a second try.

dont beat the living crap out of it. just some stiff firm hits, make sure its a soft face. if you have some vaseline or similar, you can put it on the o-ring of the new pump wich will allow it to go in easier. it took me about 15 minutes to do mine.
p.s. make sure you got all the w/p bolts out. Last edited by SWEET2KSTANG; September 12th, 2008 at 04:55 AM. |

4 bolts for the pulley, 4 for the pump, I double checked that when I couldn't get it out, I looked at the new pump and was wondering if there was some trick to it. Should I loctite the bolts back in?

No, if you have to remove it again it will be a PITA. Mine was kinda hard to get out but we pryed on it and tapped it a few times and it finaly came out. Don't forget to have big catch can or pan under there because there will be a shit load of coolant coming out with the pump.

Well I just returned, defeated again. We seriously couldn't get it out. We used gentle persuasion, and not so gentle persuasion and it is stuck on. We are thinking we should maybe try it when it isn't all nice and toasty.

There's little tabs on it that you can fit a pry bar in. It will come out for sure.

Did you guys do it with the engine cold? Everything was nice and warm when I tried to do it and I assumed things expanded and locked it in place. I am going to snag the tools I need from work and do it at home after it sits for a while if it will make it easier.

Well I let my car sit in the driveway for a few hours, let it cool down and tried again. It still wont come out. The bolts were still a little warm, but not hot, so we dumped a lot of cold water on the pump thinking it would cool down and pop off easier. Well now its a few hours later from those efforts and the car is still holding onto that pump. The little SOB will not come out. This 15-20 minute install is bullshit, this is DAYS later. I have tried to pry against it, maybe bent the shaft of the stock pump a little, not sure. Where can I go to get the tool made to do this? I really don't want to have to take my car to a shop for something that is supposed to be this simple.

Alright we got it! Waited a few more hours and it was all cooled down. We hit the pump sideways and it finally gave, turned enough for me to stick a pry bar (tire iron, not at work) in there and a few good tugs and it was out. Looked like there was a bit of buildup in there, and really looks like the owner before me filled it with 90% water 10% something orange. Important thing is I got it out and put the new one in. Next important thing is I don't think I have the pulley bolts on tight. They are as tight as i can get them up until the pulley slips, even trying to hold it with my other hand it slips. I tried taking my car for a nice fun 20 minute drive to warm everything up, and then tried tightening it more, but I still don't believe it is tight enough.
