It's easiest to drop the tank with as little fuel in it as possible. When I did mine, I just drove it until it was below 1/4 tank. Even then it wanted to tip off the jack, not a big deal if you have two people but could be a problem if you're trying to do the job by yourself.

I'm waiting until I'm just real low on gas to do it. Probably until the fuel light is on even. A full or mostly full tank will just mean it's heavier and harder to handle. Gas is around 6-7 pounds per gallon, so just figure even with 3/4 tank you got an extra ~70 pounds in there to hold up when you lower the tank.

Plus if you're gonna be fishing out that plastic clip or 1/2 of the gasket like the OP mentioned he had to do, you don't really want to stick your hand right into a pool of gas to do it.

Resurrecting this old but very helpful thread

I have a 99' and have a p0455 "large EVAP leak" code that never goes off. Its not my fuel cap and I often smell gas after filling up so I'm going to try this to see if my gasket or filler neck is damage. THanks OP for this great write up. Also, on hot days can I be losing gas through evaporation? I've notice I've been making more trips to gas stations lately.

Just an update for those with this problem. I completed my gas tank gasket replacement and all went pretty smoothly. I basically followed OP's instructions to a T and it was indeed the cause of my CEL code and gas smell. It took me about an hour with one helper, a jack, two stands, and basic tools. I just struggled with getting the fuel lines off the fuel filter (I had disconnect tool) and the tip of the filler neck (plastic part OP talked about) also fell into the gas tank for me. I didn't want to pull the pump off so I lucked out and fished it out through the filler neck hole (where gasket sits) with a wire. Getting the gasket into the hole wasn't too hard for me. I basically bent it to make it fit into the hole then used petroleum jelly to get the last bit in. I then coated the gasket hole with jelly and raised the tank and slid the filler neck into the hole. It honestly kind of had me thinking of porn. BTW, my gasket was only partially torn on one side and I was able to get it out whole. The pics show the filler tip in the gas tank and the gasket before I started.
