It cost me $400 to have a shop do my gears. While not getting *** raped...that is actually the norm for most shops who pay their mechanics ASE wages. Kinda high in my opinion but gears are something that you don't want messed up when there installed. I have seen people pay $1000 for gear changes and I've seen people get them done for free minus the cost for the gears and bearing kits themselves. It all depends on where you live and who you know? Gear changes are not that hard...it's the setting of the pinion bearing loads and backlash on the ring gear that's the most important thing to be done right. So having the proper tools to do that is essential!

I'm guessing your Jetta's speedo is off. My wife's Jetta actually reads that it's going about 4 or 5 mph too slow. I had to use the speedcal and it is dead on accurate. Congratulations on the gears.

Not too hard to do yourself with the axle housing out of the car. I set everything up on my at first w/o using my ford/otc pinon depth tool just to see how things would compare. Got it how I liked it (not even checking wear pattern). Checked it with the ford/otc tool and everything was right on. Once again didnt check wear pattern as ford claims it not necessary when using ford gears and the ford/otc tool. No whine or anything.
