I went with the ford M-4210-A it was like $30 from ford with employee discount. Not much more w/o discount. As for the fluid most use the 75w90 I went with the 75w-140 simply because that is what it actually calls for.

you dont need no damn kit, idk why everybody thinks they need one, just buy the gears and take then to a shop. Its that easy

unless you have done gears or know someone that has and has lots of experence i would recomend just taking it to a shop if you are off the silghtest bit on the backlash you will ruin the gears. but if you are doing it yourself that kit should do i just had a friend do mine but he is a ford tech and had all the tools and measuring equipment

How do you know everyone takes their car to a shop to have the work done and doesn't do it their selves?

because unless your a mechanic or are brave enough to do it, it would be easier, and even maybe cheaper, in the long run to have someone professional do it so if it does fuck up, its on them and not you. plus who wants a noisy gear?

You have a point but im still trying to figure out why this forum isnt supportive of people doing their own work. Every thread when people ask about parts theres always someone giving an install price. Just about any other forum ive seen people encourage and help each other install stuff.

Its better to buy the Ford Racing install kit, atleast thats what I was told. Mine is the complete kit and cost like $110 from Livernois.

if it was an x-pipe or catback or UDP's or something simple everyone would jump on him about wanting to install himself, but gears arnt sumthing that id encourge people to do unless i know for sure they have the skill and knowledge, n just the fact that he asked us the question about the install to me shows he dosent have the knowledge

Dont mean to slam or insalt you Tmac, i know for a fact im not brave or have enough knowledge to do it, but if you have the will then i say go for it.

How hard is it to install gears yourself? Does it require special tools or what? I only ask because I'm doing it this winter and I'm debating whether to do it myself or not.

It's not rocket science but it does need to be done correctly. Go to the library and get some books on how it's done. You do need measuring equipment like a dial indicator torque wrench just to mention two. I've helped friends do them in the drive way with just some white grease to see how the teeth are messing and that came out fine but it wasn't my vehicle. It wasn't a performance car either. All in all it's a lot easier and safer to take it to a shop and let a pro do it. But if you want to it can be done but learn to do it correctly and the first time.

Do them your self. Get a couple books like what was mentioned earlier and read up on the install. You will hear from a lot of people that they are a pain to install. Thats what makes working on your car fun. You wouldnt pay someone to fuck your wife and then brag about how good the guy was so why have someone work on your car and then brag about how fast it is.

the tools are pretty expensive man. It's not someting you can go pick up at autozone or skimp on...I know several people that have done 20+ gear changes that are gonna help me when i do e'm eventually.

i don't wanna hijack the thread, but i don't want to start a new one either...

i want to get 4:10s soon and i was wondering if getting a new rear end girdle is worth it.

i am proly goin to get frpp 4:10s and whatever install kit needed and take it somewhere to be installed in a month or two, but i will get a new rear end girdle if ya'll think its worth it.
i have a lil extra money to blow...enough to get that or maybe new LCA's

Do 31 spline upgrade and you'll be set.

LoL I couldnt have said it better myself. Its ridiculous how many people come on here saying "i just got a new ____ INSTALLED!!!" at the end of the sentence the magical word is installed....Big deal...all it shows is that you spent a little money. Go buy the parts and build your own car/install your own parts and then youll have something to talk about not just how much money you spent because really isnt that all youre doing?

As for the guy talking about tools. A simple dial caliper ($30) and dial indicator ($100 for whole setup) is really all thats needed. I happen to work at a ford dealer and have the ford/otc pinion depth tool. Just to see how accurate the cheap method is I installed mine using nothing but the tools needed to tear it down and the two mentioned above. Hell a press isnt even needed to get the bearing on, just off. Its actually EASIER if you freeze the gear and heat the bearing at 200 degrees for a few minutes. After installing them based off of what seemed good using nothing but a dial indicator and dial caliper. I then used the ford/otc tool. Guess what? The shims required by using the ford/otc pinion depth tool were the same as the caliper and dial indicator. There wasnt even a need to check the wear pattern but then again ford states if using the ford/otc tool and ford gears there is no need to check the pattern so thats why I didnt worry about it.

An inch lb dial torque wrench is needed as well but I didnt mention it above as you can go rent one from autozone or someplace like that.

Damn, thats something good to know. I have heard that heating them and cooling the pinion are better than the press also. I had no idea that dial calipers would be as effective. Reps
