quick question on TOB noise vs gear whine

im looking at an 02 manual coupe to buy. when i let off the gas and it coasts or i accelerate it makes a whining/grinding noise. my first thought was the tob but he said he just replaces the pinion seal and i thought maybe he didn't re-preload it right.

can someone explain the difference on how i can tell by the sound and when it happens.

the car does feel like it has an aftermarket clutch in it but the owner bought it like that. he is not the origional owner.

TOB noise can also change when you disengage/engage the clutch.

Chances are if the noise wasn't there before the pinion seal was replaced, that it's gear whine.
