Gears

Alright gentlemen, I have a few questions for you guys...again. O.K. so I am definitely going to buy 4.10 gears with my auto 00 GT, but in order for my speedo to be calibrated I need some kind of device that will do it for me but tuners are really expensive (for me), so do you guys think I should just have the ford dealer (who will do the installation) flash my computer for me? Or just spend the money and get an sct x3, or should I get the sct chip? And also, do you think I should get a new bearing kit to go along with the gears? or is that not necessary?

letting the ford dealer do the computer reset is fine if your on a budget just make shure you do someting because an auto is not like a manual you have more to worry about than your speedo. if you dont recalbrate your computer for the gears you will be putting a new tranny in. also get the bearing kit & new clutches for your diff. cheap insurance.

so, would it be possible for me to buy the sct chip from AM and ask them to put a tune on it for the gears, economy tune, octane, etc., and also another tune for a future mod that I am planning on doing? What I'm thinking is that all I would have to do is switch to a different setting when I get the new mod and then my computer will be set. will that work?

basicaly yes. the reason I mentioned letting the dealer do it is cause its cheaper ( usually about 40 bucks vs. 350+- for the sct ) & you said your on a budget. if you do go the sct route make shure you put the tune in before you take it to the dealer & have it towed there. I cannot stess enough that the gear in the car must match the gear in the computer before the car gets driven or else you risk blowing up the trans.

o.k. I will definitely make sure that I do that, thanks a lot, and is the chip itself easy to install along with the bezel? Oh yea and I think that I'm going to go with the chip because it's better for the tranny, but cheaper than the chip.

wait, your able to pay a ford dealer to instal the gears but can't afford a tuner? that seems a little strange seeing ford charges 1200+ for a gear install. I was quoted by 4 different dealerships.

I would get a hand held tuner, much easier to use and you can adjust parameters yourself. Also if you ever needed an updated tune it could be e-mailed to you and you can upload it yourself onto the handheld. With a chip you would have to send the chip back to whomever programmed it.

As far as the bearings, I would definitely replace them while you are doing the gears. It won't cost you much more.

+1... shop around... or get something you can put on... there is no way i would pay more then a few hundred for someone to install gears... if you have more then 600 in gears there is no way they are worth it... get some juice instead!

wow, 1200 bucks! Thats rediculus! I talked to a dealer around here (NC) that said they would do it for $225. but yea, I'm actually thinking about getting the tuner by itself now, and saving for gears later. Is it possible to have the economy tune at lower throttle and then at wot have the performance tune kick in on the x3? I thought I had heard that somewhere before, and that would be perfect.
