you could probably by a momentary switch at radio shack for a few bucks and rewire it.

The OEM switch is a momentary switch, here's the wiring diagram:

It is the pushbutton switch in the center left. Pressing it pulls terminal 9 on the instrument cluster electronics high and the cluster then sends a message to the ABS module (that's the unit with the SCP+ and SCP- inputs). SCP is Serial Communications Protocol.

When the ABS module gets this message it "toggles" the state of the t/c--if it was ON it turns it OFF, and vice versa. The instrument cluster receives an SCP message and turns the LED on (for t/c OFF) and off (for t/c ON).

If not disabled in the tune the default state is ON. There is no way to use another type of switch to make it automatically turn off.

I have read of people that just shorted the switch wires and claimed that worked, however I would be concerned about leaving that input to the cluster permanently pulled high when it was not designed to be so. I am also doubtful of claims that says this works, or that it works consistently. I suppose it might if the startup sequence of all the modules is fixed and the cluster comes up after the ABS module.

I have also seen somewhere of someone that used an electronic circuit using a dual 555 timer IC firing a transistor to pull the cluster input high momentarily sometime after the ignition was turned on. That's a lot of work to do something that you can do with a tuner that you'll be wanting someday anyway...
