I had 3.73's in mine not bad better than stock. now I'm going right to the 4.30's who gives a shit about gas mileage it's a mustang there made for hauling ass. when u run out of fuel ya just put more in. If u have to ask about milage in a stang then your not worthy of driving one. please sell it to a real stanger and get a volkswagon bug disel. my queer boss say's he get's 50 miles to the gallon. yipie looser

i went from 3,55s to 3,73s and lost 2 mpg. i cant get 20 anymore. i got 22 at best with 3.55. i cant get over 19.4 now with 3.73s and staying out of the boost

my car would still pull good with some 3.27s. and might get 24 mpg

with stick gears i can barely get 290 miles to the TANK. wheni had 4.10's i could get in the 312-320 mile to the tank depending on driving . the whole thing about your going to get horrible gas mileage is like a myth man. you have more power at lower rpms, right? SOOOO that means you can shift a lot earlier and still have PLENTY power to get through the gears. and if you shift at low rpms's then you save on gas. BOOM!! theyre you go, 1st hand experience.

Question

add to question about gear swap...

I was getting ready to post a thread on this topic when I noticed this one. I wanted 4.10's but my tuner said that I may be better off with 3.73's since I mainly drive it on the street and it isn't only a track car. I am pulling 16lbs boost and although I have the new MT ET Drags, traction is still an issue. It just doesn't seem like there would be a big difference from stock 3.55 to 3.73? But then how much difference between 3.73 and 4.10?

At any rate, at 70mph in 5th gear you'd probably be around 2600 rpm's. In my 2002GT I'm at 2400rpm at 70 but my overdrive is a tad smaller than yours.
Uh top speed is topped out speed so there is no acceleration so goes the saying TOP SPEED. and it does loose it with lower gear whether its a car, bike, boat, whatever.

Question

Originally Posted by cliffyk View Post

So, a 245/45-17 has a tread that's 245 mm wide, an aspect ratio of 45, and is meant for a 17" wheel.

245 * .45 = 110.25 mm, so we know the sidewall is 110.25 mm high, add the sidewal height * 2 to the wheel diameter and we find that this tire is 110.25 * 2 + 17 * 25.4 or 652.3 mm, or 25.68" which is pretty close to the 25.7" most manufacturers state.

Now lets do a 275/40-17, 275 * .4 = 110 mm, 110 * 2 + 17 * 25.4 = 651.8 mm = 25.66" (again pretty close to 25.7").

OK, now let's do the math for a 225/45-17; 225 * .45 = 101.25 mm, so a 225/45-17 tire is going to have an outside diameter of (101.25 * 2 + 17 * 25.4) = 634.3 mm = 24.97" (25" is the quoted spec).

That's how you change tire diameters--buy tires of a different diameter...
what about 315/35/17s?

This Is A No Brainer Question. Lower Gear Will Drop The Gas Milleage Some, But If You Would Like To Win Races Then Who Cares.
The Best Rule Of Thumb I Have Heard Is 3.73 For Stick, And 4.10's For Auto. I Run A 4.10 With A Manual Valve Body Tranny. Love It. Drive It On The Street, And Run L0w 10's At Track. Heck We Pay $7.00 For Race Gas, So Money Better Not Matter That Much. ( I Am Not Rich Either.)
