What Cam?

I have a huge list of mods going in over the winter but I can't decide on the cam. What you see in my sig is what I have and here is the list of what is coming.

Patriot Stage II heads (save your flames for another thread please)
4.10 gears
Tubular K member
Tubular A arms
Front Coilovers
Adjustable Upper Control arms

A lot of people say Comp Cams 262...I like to go a little bigger then the norm and have been thinking 270's...
What do you guys think?

theres nothing wrong with patriots so dont listen to anyone about that. i know a few people that run them with a lot of success. i agree i would go a little bigger than the 262s. sounds like a good little winter project you got goin on

I was thinking 278....not sure still. It was easier picking a cam for the Goat... Go big or go home. Love that lopey sound! And pulls like a raped ape and like I have nos when I hit 4k rpms....nothing like it!

the 278 cams will make the valve hit the piston if you dont have valve release

The flow #'s that are put out by those heads are higher than a 75%(88.5% to be exact) flow ratio and you are going to want a "reverse split" or more intake duration than exhaust. Due to the restrictied cylinder volume and poor head designs these engine seem to prefer a smaller cam, will call the middle of the road rather than small. If your going to spend the money you may want to consider a custom cam for your application.

Here is something I suggest you look at:

270 adv. I duration
264 adv. E duration
.555"max lift Intake
.555"max lift exhaust
113 or 114 LSA

On a 110* intake centerline this cam will give great clearence (ptv) and probably net 5-10 rwhp over a generic off the shelf cam.

Again without a flowchart this is only going to be close as I went from Patriots advertised flow numbers.

I still suggest the same cam, the flow numbers are to the same ratio or close. The profile I gave you will have huge gains in the middle and upper rpms and will pull from 3300-6600 after that you'll run out of intake. You will need to upgrade spring and be sure to degree them. AS I said these will work better than a generic cam as they are profiled more to your set-up. You can buy a cam everyone has or get one that is set for your needs.

Again with those exhaust numbers you'll want something to favor the intake. You'll make more power with a custom grind over any generic cam... I'll stop at that.. let me know if you need anyfurther info.
