Trans gets stuck in reverse?


this is about the 3rd time its ever happened. First time was about 2 weeks ago and today it happened twice. When I go into reverse, it is stuck in gear and I can't push it out of gear. I literally had to kick it as hard as I could with my foot to get it out of gear. All other gears 1-5 have never gotten stuck in gear. I am positive its something internally wrong with the trans.

Whats the cause of this?

btw: Its a 99 GT w/ 74xxx miles. The trans occasionally grinds 3rd and 4th gear.

I used to have a Vega (< OK, you can stop laughing now, I was in HS at the time) Anyway, the synchros used to fail and would get stuck in 3rd gear. The first time it happened, I took it out and took the bottom off on my work bench. It rolled over during inspection and popped out of 3rd. I messed with it for an hour and could not figure out why it got stuck, but was "fine" now.

I re-installed it and got stuck again 2 days later

I am guessing syncros in yours as well.

My T-45 has also done that a couple of time. Once it pops back out it's fine until it happens again...... sometimes months later. I have no answers for you though

Do you have a short throw shifter? Also, clutch good?

If no shoft throw and clutch is fine, then it can be your synchros/blocking rings. When my synchro went out in 3rd gear, my mechanic said for me to put it into 3rd gear and floor it untill 5000rps. He said for me to pull it out of gear right near 5000rpms when the most amount of stress is going on. He said that if I couldn't pull it out of gear at that point, I had shaved my blocking ring my blocking ring teeth and that the sycnhros in turn would also be gone.

It came outta gear, so the diagnosis was just my synchro. But it turned out when he got into the transmission that because the synchro failed it would 'hop; and grind into the edge of 3rd gear. I had to get the gear and everything replaced.

Reverse has no syncros in a T-45

it may be bent shift keys in the reverse slider assembly.
