$2,000 for a valve job ?
How much is just buying a new head all together ? Geez Doesnt surprise me though. Really beating the hell out of that small motor to get it to make the numbers it does.

300hp out of a turbo 4-cylinder isn't quite the beating you guys seem to think it is, though it's certainly harder on internals than it is to pull the same power out of a larger displacement engine. The Japanese have been pulling 300+ hp out of 2.0L motors since the early 80's, maybe even the late 70's. Heck, everyone was pulling much more than that with the Group B rally cars (Toyota was pulling 600 hp out of a turbo 2.0L with their Group B Celica with the 4T-GTE)
That being said... $2k for a valve job?!? Do they have to drop the motor to do it? I know it's tight in there, and not a lot of clearance on "top" of the piston with a boxer engine, but still, that seems pretty grossly overpriced to me.

Has anyone thought to check what the book time is? Is it only one head or is it both of them?
Cylinder Head Assembly Replace Right Bank A 9.1 12.7 Notes Includes: R&I Head, Grind Valves & Seats, Transfer Necessary Parts, Make Necessary Adjustments. Left Bank A 8.5 11.8 Notes Includes: R&I Head, Grind Valves & Seats, Transfer Necessary Parts, Make Necessary Adjustments. Both Banks A 12.9 17.6 Notes Includes: R&I Head, Grind Valves & Seats, Transfer Necessary Parts, Make Necessary Adjustments. Plus parts So lets say its the left head. That pays 11.8 hours @ $100. That's $1180 just in labor. Not to mention shop rates usually range from $90-125/hr depending on where your located. If they are doing both heads which they probably are he is getting a good deal. Everyone is so quick to assume that every dealer and shop is out to get them. Sure there are a few shops that do some shady shit but most of them are just trying to make a living just like the rest of you.

It could also be a timing belt job with some other 80k Maint - that can get pricey real fast.

i assume that something has happened to make you take it to the dealership, so ill take it as a given the car does need head work and the dealership isn't lying about that. When it comes to price, I can see head on a wrx being pricey for a 4 cycl. There are two, and they are difficult to get to, there would be more labor then on most I4's. Plus, OE Japanese parts are very pricey as others have mentioned, you very well might be better off getting aftermarket parts.
