My first car!

hey, i've been driving my "families" 2004 bmw 325xi, but i have three brothers and we all use it. my older brother is getting it cause hes graduating college and needs a car to get to his work.

I am now at college also (freshman) and because of good grades (woot) my dad (a huge car nut) wants to buy me a car, he said to find a good car for $12K that will last me the next 3 years (of college) because he doesn't want me stealing his m6 all summer.

he's a huge BMW nut so convincing him of a 2003 or so 325 or 330 xi wouldnt be too difficult as i found a lot between 10-15K at the local bmw dealership and etc.

but what are my other options?

i live in NH so i get a lot of snow, so AWD is a must.

i was thinking somewhere along...

2003 or so subaru impreza wrx or a 2003 3 series of some type.

any suggestions let me know, im planning on putting my extra cash into some basic upgrades (intake, exaust, etc.) over the next few years so keep parts availability in mind.

thanks!

lol yeah those are excellent in snow , I normally hear pretty good things on the imprezas so if it has to be awd that would prolly be my vote.

Why did you join a Mustang forum to ask if a Subaru would be a good car for you?

its not that uncommon. my ex had to share a car with her brother and he is a senior in college and she is a freshman in college.

the real reason is why is he asking questions about other cars on a mustang forum, when he has never had a mustang.

and i don't know about you guys but i have driven my car in the winter and have no problem. you just gotta know how to drive it and how to handle your car. take it to a parking lot and see how it reacts, all it takes is practice.

WRX and spend the money you saved from not getting an STI to make it faster than one

And really, I'm wondering the same thing; why did you come to a Mustang site? lol

Maybe you should just get a 99-04 gt stang and save a couple bucks for a beater car for when it snows. That way you can title yourself as cool.

For college, I suggest NOT having a nice car. It's just one more thing to worry about.

Just spend a grand or two on a reliable beater that you don't care about getting dinged, nicked, kicked, doored, etc.

1st-gen DSM would be good if you want something cheap, AWD, and sporty, though it may not be particularly reliable.

Having a pickup can be a godsend in school, an '80s Toyota 4WD with the Xtra Cab would be my suggestion.

You may want a nice car now, but you'll be much better off stashing that money 'til you're done with school.

Trying to convince a younster to not get a nice car when given the opportunity is like taking a shot in the dark.
