1986 F-150 302 electrical problems
Hello everyone. New member to this site and I need some info if possible from the other members. I have a problem with my 86 F150. It was working fine until 2 days ago when it quit as I was driving. It started again right away and then killed a few moments later. A friend pulled me home and we began a search for the problem. No spark what so ever. Good fuel pressure. We installed a new coil-still no spark. New pickup coil in distributor and it started right off. Then killed twice and again no spark. Checked Ignition item on dist. and it was fine. Put in a new pickup coil and it started again. Then killed after a minute of running. We quickly checked out wiring and found a green wire (with yellow strip) that had been hot and melted the coating. It runs from (I think) the key (as it is hot when key is on) to another wire from the dist and one from the coil. We put in a new wire and started again. Ran ok for a few moments and then quit. We were afraid we had burned out the pickup coil again but then we cut off another wire that ran from the three (coil, ignition key, dist.) and into a soft rubber connection. This soft rubber connection must be a volt reducer or something like that and it ran back into the firewall and ????. We started the pickup again after eliminating the connection and all is well. My question is: Will the elimination of this item damage my pickup's "brain"? I know this is a difficult question to answer when you haven't seen the wiring but maybe someone knows. THanks

Just FYI, a soft rubber connection can in no way be a voltage reducer.
