Just wondering

Alright, my friend bought a 1984 Toyota pickup(which I've got a serious problem with Toyotas and hate to even be asking this for him). He bought it for $10. That's right $10 from one of our friends dads(I call it the Toy). But anyway, it runs decent but the engine shakes pretty badly and their in the process of diagnosing the problem but he found a deal on a Chevy 305 engine and he can't find if this engine would work with an s-10 transmission underneath of his Toy truck. Anybody have any experience with this?

So basically, imo, he's just putting a demon's soul in a devil's body. But that's just me,lol.

Shakes when? All the time, or just on start-up?

If you're gonna put a CSB in a 'yota, don't go with an S10 tranny. There's nothing good that ever came out of an S10 (except maybe the Vortec 4.3L). If you're gonna put a chevy tranny in it, go for a Turbo 350 or 400, or if you want a stick, grab one out of a camaro.

Personally, if they're gonna grab another motor, just grab a 22R. Those things are indestructible. The only one I've ever seen with a problem didn't have the head bolts torqed down, so it blew a head gasket.

And why the hate on toyotas?

Alright, thanks. It shakes all the time not just on the start up and it idles really high.

Basically I just have a major problem with how Toyota got fell into dominating the American automarket. But that's a whole other story.

Sorry for the following rant, I did try to be helpful below it...

---------
Hrmm.. this is a tangent, which I apologise to the allmighty mods for my digression, but...

How exactly did Toyota "fall" into dominating the American auto market? I know there's more to business than service and product, but, looking at those two things, Toyota is dominating because they're providing a superior product with superior service, and the American auto manufacturers are NOT keeping up.

*Case in point: compact pickups. Would you rather buy a Canyon/Colorado, a Ranger, a Dakota, or a Tacoma?
*Case in point: sport compacts: Cobalt vs. Focus vs. Caliber vs. tC.
*Case in point: mid-size sedans: Fusion vs. Malibu vs. Camry. Okay, the Ford might have the edge here. Duratec V6 + AWD is awesome.
*Case in point: minivans: I honestly don't know any besides the Freestar

In all the general cases, I trust the toyota to be a better rig initially, hold up longer, and be worth more when I go to sell, which translates to me choosing to give them my money when I want to buy that class of vehicle instead of Ford, Dodge, or Chevy.

And as a corollary, the blue-collar work is still being done in the US, so I have no guilt about costing Americans jobs, as it's just untrue.

If Ford wants my money for a new vehicle, then they need to start bringing in their european and aussie cars, and NOT CHANGING THEM. Bring me a Focus RS, and maybe I won't buy a WRX. Bring me a Falcon XT6 (or is that XR6, I can never remember...), and I won't buy a japanese four-door. But the USDM Market, outside of a few key examples (Mustang being one of them, Corvette being another) just sucks.

Okay, back on point

Have you checked the motor mounts? Also, is the wee beastie carb'd (my assumption) or FI? Is it just idling way high on initial start-up, or anytime? I'd check the throttle cable, make sure all the linkages are clean and properly lubed (WD-40 is NOT a proper lubricant, something like Chain Lube or Tri-Flow will work), also, check the valves for proper adjustment, and if they have to be off, make sure they're loose. A loose valve is a happy valve.

Hope that helps! If it doesn't, rip 'er out and drop that small block in, though a 5.0 would fit better

Yeah, his brother-in-law thinks it's the motor mounts, but he's really wanting a larger engine.

On my argument about Toyota, I think a very bright man who some Mustang fans may have heard of named Jack Roush said it best:
"Americans shouldn't buy Japanese cars. When we're faced with the prospect of having somebody come into our world and strip our economy of its essence, and go convey that for interests that are abroad, then we're not doing the right things for our country," Roush said. "If we're forced, based on the fact that we can't be competitive or that their consumers won't buy as many things from our manufacturers and our workers as we buy from theirs, well, then there's a train wreck coming."

My biggest peeve is the fact that Toyota had the money fall into their lap when all of a sudden the market shifted away from all the trucks and SUVs that Americans were making(especially Ford). Then everybody saw these little compact cars and were amazed. I think Ford and Chevy were doing what they had to for the customer and it the customer shot them in the foot as soon as the oil prices went up.

I'm also a brand loyalist though. Ford till the day I die. So that explains some of it.

I'll accept that, and if your friend wants a larger engine, go for it!

When the SUV popularity started slowing down, why didn't Ford bring over some of their European stuff? I mean, have you seen a Euro Fiesta? Same engine as the focus, similar lines, 2/3rds the weight. I have no clue why the won't build 'em here.

I just hate this idea that I should buy the car they're building, instead of them building the car I want to buy. It seems to me that car manufacturers are run by bankers instead of car guys, and that's just sad.
