1988 Ford Tempo GLS project
As you guys may know, i dont have a Mustang, i guess its a mini Mustang. I bought the car in April and it practically need to be fully gone over. It has a busted drivers side rear spring, worn passengers side tierod end, the trans leaks, engine leaks, the rack leaks, and so on. The seats have a stale feeling to them, the dash is cracked and it smells like a smoker. The exterior is rusted and so are the floor boards. also had a Macco B.S. paint job. What my goal is, is to take a car that is almost never modded and turn it into a tastfully modified street car that can run low 14's on all motor.
So, this is what i'm starting with... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here she is after some cleaning and a little bit of paint... ![]() The rust... ![]() ![]() ![]() Parts run... ![]() ![]()

Now, as of today, 10/23/09, i got the block back from the machine shop...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Its bored .030" over, cleaned, new cam bearings, new freeze plugs, and polished the crank. Now i just need to get my bearings for the crank and rods, .030 over pistons and the Lunati cam at my buddies house. i'll post pics of the cam later this weekend. The rest of the engine has to wait to be built untill i get the original engine out of the car. the one i'm building i got from a friend out of a 92 parts car, and it was just the block, crank and connecting rods w/ a burt up piston. The final product... 2.3 bored .030" over, Lunati cam, 1.7:1 rockers, shaved head, grind out combustion chamber on the head, port and polish, header, 7lb flywheel, 5 speed swap, Contour SVT front and rear disc brakes, Moog control arms with poly bushings, rear sway bar, Mustang cobra R rims, black w/ machined lip, grey interior with red piping on the seats, Tuxedo black paint with candy red met w/tint stripe around the car. sounds plain and simple and not too exciting, but watch the build and hopefully you guys like it as much as i will. |

yup! i really wish i knew what happened to the car. i know he sold it, but yea, i wonder what the new owner did, or if he scrapped it. To me it seems weird to come that far on the car and just git rid of it. I really like urs though. is that an 86 or 87?

No, its going to be an all motor project for now, and if i'm not happy, i'm swapping to a stock compression head, but with all the porting work done and supercharging it.
yea, i noticed it had the 92-94 front a rear bumper. It looks pretty awesome with the 5.0 sitting in the engine bay |

thanks, it is a lot of fun, and the best part is people's reactions when they hear its a Tempo of all things.
And yea, this is the car that L.B. Smith is doing th body work on. i dont have the patience to weld in new metal, then bondo and sand, and primer and sand and so on. but i am doin the rest of the work myself. Is anybody here getting rid of a used Foxbody fuel pump for free or really cheap? i want to see if the pump works in the tempo, they look the same, but not sure if they work. So i picked up my Lunati cam this weekend along with performance valve springs, valves and a damn near like new Dash. The lift at the valves with the 1.7 rockers will be .499" compared to the .419 stock with 1.6 rockers and stock cam. doesnt seem like much, but with the head porting and honing out the intake manifold, it should be a pretty decent gain in power. I'll have pics tomorrow of some of the stuff. also just ordered the pistons tonight and ordering the main and rod bearings tomrrow

will do, probably in a few weeks over a weekend sometime when i'm pulling the enigne out of the car so i could use some help with that. have another friend with an earlier foxbody that offered to help too. Right now all i have is the block, crank, bearings, cam and pistons. The rest of the parts are coming out of the car itself. I'll probably be towing it in in about 2-3 weeks and starting the tear down. I'm probably putting the crank and cam in tomorrow. Pistons will be here on the 13th of November.

yea man, cant wait. Cant believe its finally comming together. when i first started the project in april, people were saying that i'd never get around to doing it, and well, they were wrong haha. cant wait till the first fire up. its gonna kill me until i get it done, cuz after i build the engine, its not just a matter of putting it in and goin, cuz the trans is getting swapped over and i'll need to rebuild that too before putting that in. oh but here are the cam specs on stock 1.6 rockers, i'm gonna be running 1.7 ratio rocker though so lift is gonna be .499 at the valves
![]() ![]() stock lift at the valve with the "ford performance" cam is .419, so i guess its kinda a mild cam, but it'll do the trick. not sure of the duration on the stock cams. |

so far, have the crank and cam in, waiting on pistons, then have to take the connecting rods and pistons to the machine shop to press the piston pin in.
