I have looked right on the damper, and there is a mark on it and i have even put nail polish on it so its easier to see. But when i have the engine running, and point my timing light at the damper i dont see the mark at all. Thanks and well thats all that is needed to time this engine right?

Yeah- connect to num 1 spark plug wire, disconnect and plug the vacuum advance if you have one, and adjust

Tryed that! Can't see the mark on the damper no matter what timing I have it at, and so thats why I tryed it on plug 6 thinking it might be 180 degrees out. Any other ideas?

Hey- use white nail polish or somethin ez to see but u did that prolly- Disconnect the vacuum hose- slowly turn the distributer to adjust and if the timing gun s receiving the proper signal from the spark plug wire it should be readable. I can't see why the mark is hidden??? shine the light on the balancer and the pointer. Can u take a pic and pm me or post it???

Well i really cant get u a picture until maybe thursday, but i have a feeling that the timing light is bad. Its a real old one that my dad bought when he was 15 and now hes 52. So i guess ill try a new timing light, but if that doesnt work ill take a few pictures of how i have it set up and then where I am pointing the light and how I have it marked. And thanks so much for ur help! Hope i can get this figured out. Ever since they installed this engine it has been nothing but trouble!! About 7 oil leaks, all the same one, but each time they said they fixed it and they didnt, and now the transfer case is leaking which it wasn't doing before, and well it doesnt sound good because they dont know how to tune anything!! I mean comon how hard is it to adjust the choke correctly? They are just a bad place to go and I have nothing good to say about them.

Okay, so its not my timing light. I did finally find the mark on the damper while the engine is running! The only problem is that it is timed way off. When I am timing it on plug 1 it seems to be to the right of the correct timing of 4 degrees by about 20-30 degrees. And when I time it on plug 6 it is about 120-90 degrees out. The other problem, is that the timing mark jumps around, its there one second and then the next its gone. There seems to be no pattern to this. Here are some pictures I took, and just ask any questions about them or anything else.
