Jeep question

So today I go and put gas in the Jeep (97 Grand Cherokee, I6) and when I go to start it back up, it cranks but wouldn't start. I hit the gas while turning the key to the "start" position and it would rev up perfectly fine but as soon as I went to let it idle it would die. I finally figured, ok, it's revving, and I need to get out of the gas pump, so I turned the key to the on position, feathered the gas to just under 1k RPM and then stuck it in drive. After banging it into gear, it ran normal, idled just fine, and I drove into town, hung out with my gf for a few hours, and then drove home, no issues.

Any thoughts? I was leaning toward IAC but not entirely sure. It does have a pulley that squeaks like hell until the motor warms up and a few other little gremlins but nothing (that I knew of) major till now.

4.0's don't like the cold starts. Could be a battery or cps issue.

You should check out the Optima batteries.

They are good for cold cranking and are gel type.

Nothing like a tractor battery though.. those damn things last 25 years.

I have a trickle charger on the jeep in the winter just in case I might need it, like when it decided to snow 5in right after I got home. Can't wait until summer, so I can start fabbing up some shit for the jeep. New bumpers and rear quarter panels here I come.

I'll check out the battery, maybe get a red top like the one in my mustang. It worries me that I have to basically neutral drop it to get it running. Granted I make sure the RPM's are <1k but still I can't imagine it's all that great on it.

CPS? Crank position sensor? Or something else?
