How to make a 3000 GT fast????

This friend of mine has a slow ass 3000 GT, things running like a 17 in the 1/4 mile. (remeber were at mile high though) So today were going to try to make it fast, what should we start with?

I was thinking weight removal and a different MAF and therottle body. We already put a CAI in it so......what next beside turbo's or somehting?

To make one of those fast! Good luck. They weigh a fucking ton and are extremely underpowered. I had one. Nitrous. That is the only thing aside from turbo or sc that can do it.

Well if you're a mile high, i'd find a nice, steep, and sudden elevation drop to sea level, something like a cliff, and drive it off of there.

Ha! I was gonna say pushing it out the back of a C-5 at 40,000 feet ought to correct it's acceleration woes nicely.....

exactly. Those things are stupid heavy. Even if it was a VR4 the power to weight ratio is just not good

hell, the vr4's run pretty decent. its a 6g74 if i remember right, but weight isnt in its favor. you can do some work on them and make them run good, but will take money. the worst part about the motor is that they are expensive as well for aftermarket parts. i personally would be porting the manifold and the heads. i ported a 6g72 top end and the gains were nice, that and a good tune and call it a day.

They are good looking cars, mine was black. Got a lot of attention from female type human forms. However, at 221HP and between 3100-3800 pounds depending on the model. No bueno.

An N/A 3000GT? Is it DOHC or SOHC (I think there was both)? I'm assuming we're talking about a FWD, not an AWD.

It's gonna take a LOT to get that thing going. Which is sad, because those are fantastic looking cars.

Is he willing to gut it? Pulling weight will be the most beneficial thing he can do. Should be able to pull at least a couple hundred pounds out that way.

+1 on the weight reduction. That is going to be your best bet without breaking the bank.

I would suggest posting your question on a tuner site I am sure there are twin turbo conversions and some Japanese drifters that have converted them to rear wheel drive.
They were very popular cars in their day out selling the Nissan 300ZX.
So good luck. I can tell you this like any import tuner project (except light Honda civics) you are going to spend a lot of money to build a car that looks great but still needs NOS to really go fast. The only 3000GT that was even close to quick (by today's standards) was the AWD 3.0 L DOHC 24-valve, twin-turbocharged, twin-intercooled V6, the VR4 produced either 300 BHP Very High tech car for the 90s and high price /performance. Many say Mitsubishi built these just to test tech ideas on. (maybe just a excuse of a dismal failure but if what they learned on the 3000GTVR4 gave us the Evo then it was money well spent.

Actually, the Eclipse/Talon/Laser had more to do with the Evo than the 3000GT. The turbo AWD Eclipse drivetrain was used with minor modifications by the Evo all the way through the IXs. Hell, even the Galant (in VR-4 guise) had more to do with the Evo than the 3000GT.

In it's day, the 3000GT VR-4 was one of the top-10 fastest stock cars as measured by 1/4 mile E.T.

yeah its a VR4 DOHC. We unbolted the exhaust past the 2nd resonator and gained a lot of power. Enough to notice it in the butt dyno. We also pulled his spare tire, jack and rear trunk pannel. Lost like 80#'s.

its still slow though. We beat a 240SX and thats about it. I'm trying to get him to pull the interior but he wont.

He has some money ($600) to put into it but we dont know where to start.

It's a VR4? I thought all VR4s were turbo. You want cheap, easy speed? Get a manual boost controller and crank up the boost!

Oh, and if you want to see the potential of that car, it's not at a drag strip.

A VR4? Oh hell yeah. Now we are talking. You can go to a petstore and buy about $15 dollars in aquarium parts to manually control boost on those. Crank that shit up, that block can hold a good amount. Buddy of mine had one of those and he could spin all 14 wheels with heavy ass 19"s.

Get on a forum made for these cars. Those guys can walk you through everything.
