Bought a Jeep Tonight - Paint Advice
I bought a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo tonight! I needed a winter car and this will be perfect. I had a client who brought it in for a trade and we couldn't give him enough for it ($100) and he decided just not to trade it, so I personally offered him $300 and he took it along with the 2007 Mustang GT I was selling him.
Anyways, long story short, it's the 4.0 I-6 an it runs like a champ. 149k. The interior is in phenomonal condition. The exterior...not so much. The body is straight as can be, but the paint is super oxidized and peeling from everybody panel. I've got very very little money to spend painting because I need to throw tires on it along with a new radio. I've heard of people using Rustoleum and foam brushes for their "beater" cars and having great results for like $125. Anyone have any advice or experience?

Pics?
And if its oxidized you can rub it out, bring back shine to the dull parts, and once its shiny go find the closest matching paint from advance then prep and spray maybe a light wet sand after wards. Thats a budget fix, like 25$

It's dark right now and I'm still at work trying to convince one of my co-workers to help me drive the Jeep home because I now have the Jeep and the Mustang here. I'll try and get them up once I get home if I can. Thanks for the advice thus far. I appreciate any and all you can give!

That should work, I mean really you can sand it your self and take our/remove everything you can (lights and plastic you dont want painted) and go to macco just get it sprayed for 200$. Idc what anyone has to say its worth it.

That's also an option I'm weighing. It used to be silver, so I'd like to go with Silver again or Black.

yeah, If you change the color, take some rattle cans and do all the jambs first. That way they some what match. I think matte silver would be pimp.

Looks awesome man! Yeah I'm excited to take it up to Estes Park and some other places here in the Rockies! Btw, that $200 job that Macco does...would I need to prime it myself? Of course I'd sand that sucker two or three times, but primer as well? And does that $200 job include a clearcoat?

Hmm +1 on the addiction part. That Jeep you have is a baby with the mileage it has. Lets see a pic of it.
![]() (The third one in the driveway) Why have it painted? Rattle can the thing and go beat on it. That is what they are made for. Mine are all rattle canned and look good.

+1 on rattle can, but cost of paint and time dont compute to just pay the 200. idk just me. (actually I have rattle caned a car flat black and it looked good as hell!)
I vote see how much you love it first. just rub it out (not one) and touch it up with something close.

Okay! Finally got some pictures!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The three dark ones are from before I washed it and just to show some of the oxidation. But the first one is right after I washed it the other day. It's brightening up a bit...do you guys think the paint may be salvageable with some serious elbow grease, polish, wax, clay-bars, etc.?
