d17a1 into a 97 civic ex?

ok, so my dad totalled his 04 civic lx and he's tight on cash. i offerred to swap his motor into my brother's old 97 EX. my dad doesn't seem to interested but i figure that once i do it, he'll be happy with it until he can get a new car.

so, anybody know what i need to do the swap? both cars are complete except that the 04 is totalled and the 97 doesn't run.

im pretty sure to swap the d17 into a d16 you need to just take everything from the 04. engine tranny computer wiring harness all for it. even if you dont need to it would be on the safe side. only thing im not sure on is the axle length. if the 04 axles are the right length for the 97 body or if the 97 axles will fit into the 04 tranny. the problem could easily be solved if 1. they are the same tranny and axles. 2. the 97 tranny bolts up to the d17 (which it should since its d-series)

There's quite a few differences to consider.

1) The '97 is a 6th Gen which used a double wishbone style front suspension. The '04 is a 7th Gen which used the McPherson Strut style. Different suspension may mean different axle length.

2) The 7th gen is a bigger, wider frame than the 6th Gen (designed to fit the new K series engines). Motor mounts and such are likely to be different.

3) The '97 used the P2P ECU with V-TEC. The '04 used the L54 ECU since the D17A1 is non-VTEC so you would have to swap the ECU and the entire harness over or "chip" the P2P ECU to not read V-TEC which can be a pain. Especially since the P2P isn't as cooperative as the P28, P72, and P75 ECUs found in the Integras and Si/SiR/GSR/Type-R Hondas.

Honestly, I think you would find it easier to pick up a D16 from a junkyard for cheap and swap it into the '97.

What's wrong with the '97 that it doesn't run? Something that could be fixed for less than $100 in parts or are we talking internal engine failure?

i think all that's wrong with the 97 is that the head is cracked. not sure though. i just texted my brother to find out. good call on that though, if that's all it is, i can probably find a head pretty easily.

I was at the junkyard near me a couple weeks ago and saw alot of Civic EXs out there with the D16Y8. Grab a head off one for $100, have it cleaned up a bit with a new head gasket for another $100, bolt it on and drive the car.

Now if it was me, I'd go more for performance with it and find a 3rd Gen. Integra with the B18B1 and swap engine, ECU, harness, and everything. I would then hunt down a B18C1 (GSR) or B18C5 (Type-R) head for the bigger cams, titanium valve springs, and VTEC. I would then chip a P75 ECU for the VTEC and done, enjoy 180hp in a 1900lb car. Of course, this is if I couldn't find an Integra GSR or Type-R to begin with and swap everything together but that is rare to find as enthusiasts are on those like a hawk and usually before they ever reach a junkyard.
