Car has been sittng for 20 years....where should i start.

Hey guys i know this isnt a mustang, but i know you guys know your things about cars so i figured i could get some help. My buddy has a 1985 bmw 325e and has been sitting since about 1990. What should i first start..i know im going to need all new fluids, oil, battery, gas, tires, filters, spark plugs and wires. What else should we start with to get this running again. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would change everything that's been mentioned and then try to start it. Most likely, it's not going to start.

At that point, you get to troubleshoot what's wrong. Most likely you'll have to tear down the engine and rebuild it.

Forget all of that......I've personally started many a car that has sat longer and is older than this is. Drain the gas and fill it with fresh, CHECK the fluids and belts and hoses and intake for damage. DON'T replace shit until you see if it even runs. Throw a charger on the batter on trickle to see if it will take a charge, then throw it on start and try her out. It'll cough and sputter some but should smooth out. Then let it warm up and make sure everything is functioning. Then shut it down and start changing fluids, plugs wires belts hoses etc. Otherwise it'll all be a huge waste of time and money!

take out the spark plugs and spray some wd40 on the cylinders, that will help prevent the rings getting stuck

I could see that possibly causing vapor lock though. I say replace everything rubber, new fluids, plugs, filters, but before any of that make sure it runs and that you're not throwing money into a bigger money pit than a regular car would be. Also, try some Seafoam or some kind of fuel additive to clean the engine out. I personally perfer Amsoil P.I. It'll clean up the injectors and the cylinders.
