my demo derby car build thread!!

alright guys and gals, im building a derby car so i made this thread to show the progress and whatnot. it needs to be done by the end of june. The derby is an 80's and newer derby just so you know. my car is a 1983 Delta 88 that runs great.

here she is, in all of her brown glory

removed the fiberglass front

removed the tail lights

the crappy weather is forcing me to put everything in the back of the car and in the garage.

i have a TON of wires to sort through.

so far most of the interior is gone except the front seats, door panels and carpet.

there are 6 bolts holding each seat down and two are directly under the slider and the only way to get to them is to move the power seat all the way foreward. but the battery is shot. i had the charger on it for 5 hours and i turned the key and nothing. so hopefully the battery is the problem, i just hope i didnt pull something off that i shouldnt have.

anybody know where i can find headers that go straight up through the hood? the engine is a 307.

if anyone has any questions, just ask!

Actually, I think this thread is probably better suited here in the All Other Vehicles section since it's not a Mustang. I'm pretty sure the Projects section is meant for Mustangs only.

Small block chevy right? Just find some shorty headers that have a middle dump and mount them upside-down and then put some piping on them. Something like this.

its got an olds 307 in it. from what ive been told you cant flip the manifolds upside down so i dont think headers like that could be flipped either.

im thinking of getting these.

well, all the interior is now gone and pulled a bunch of stuff off the engine. but i have two questions for you guys.

1. i want to re-wire the car so that the only wiring is for the battery, ignition, and starter. how would i wire that up?

2. theres alot of smog shit on this thing and im wondering what i should and shouldnt pull off it.

ill try to get some more pics up in a couple days here.

Pull every thing off, emissions wise, the only two vacuum lines you'll need is to the distributor advance and the brake booster, remove and plug everything else. Unless you want your heater controls to work than you'll need that too.

To wire it as such I would probably leave the alternator in the loop too. Run a 4ga wire from the battery + to the starter (large terminal only) then a 8ga wire to the alternator from there. Run a small gauge wire from the battery to a push button then from the push button to the small starter terminal (energizer wire). Run a 4ga ground from the battery to the engine block and a small gauge ground to the body. Run a good sized one from the engine to the frame. Personally I would leave the gauges operational which would change up this process some.

I would make a couple redundant grounds. I got taken out in my first derby because my single ground got cut in half.

I couldn't tell you about the vacuum lines but overheating at idle while full of coolant sounds like a water pump.
