2000 chevy blazer help

My little brother just called me on his way to work telling me the blazer started losing acceleration very bad and then dumped black smoke out of the exhaust and had almost no power. He managed to limp it to work but I am unsure what to tell him or what the problem could be. It has been horribly sluggish lately and im pretty sure it was misfiring. Any ideas?

If this has a Vortec engine there is a good chance the fuel pressure regulator is leaking under the upper intake manifold. The injectors can also stick. There are plastic fuel hoses that can leak also. It's usually the regulator though.

Thank you for the response, it is the Vortec engine. That sounds like a pain in the ass I will check all hoses for leaks and then take things from there.
