friend just bought an 85 trans am that needs allot of work

my friend picked up an 85 trans am yesterday, pretty much needs everything redone. hes hell bent on fixing it up though. the transmission is out and i was wondering if any of you guys knew what auto trans they came with? i think its a 700R4 thanks guys

It may be a 2004R

th f-body got the 700's in them.

should have the 700r4. Thats what I had in my 88 iroc. They are a slushbox but can be built up. Is the '85 tbi or tpi? 305,350? Either way, crate motor that beotch. I had a 305 tpi with full bolt-ons and it was still slow as molasses in the tundra.

85 will be tbi. they also came with the 305 h.o. as well

why crate motor??? cheaper to just build one with the parts you want and go.

Crate or ground up build, either way tweaking on the 305 will be a waste.

would a turbo 350 bolt up to the 305? and we got it running and its runnin pretty good

it will bolt up just fine. the shifter pointer wont be correct.
