Head porting questions

I have a 1975 Camaro LT with a crate 305ci and a TH-350 auto trans. I got the motor for free from a good buddy who wasn't going to use it. It has literally been sitting around for 15~ years. I pulled the car out of a ditch for $500 and have been working on it ever since trying to make it road ready.
Here are some pics:

I have a new carb sitting in my garage and the distributor and wires have been put in place since those pics were taken.

I want this car to be faster than my current mustang but its going to need some help. I want to port the heads and do a cam swap. I'm trying to save some money as well. Can I take the heads off and leave the head gasket that is in there on? Or will I have to replace them? I have worked on smaller motors before, but not a car motor. I want to learn on this motor since it was free so I can be prepared when I go to rebuild my mustang motor. Porting seems pretty straight forward though. Tips? Tricks? questions?

If u want it to b right, Pay somebody to do it. And go buy some cheap heads from the junk yard and practice on them.

change the head gaskets. as for porting, its not something you just jump in and do. then there is what you are are planning on doing as well. most chevy factory irons form the 70's have bath tub cumbustion chambers, crappy short side, and not much in favor anywhere else either.

look up mondello performance and look for the tech articals. they also sell a awsome head porting kit. has everything you need. your going to have to do alot to make a 305 run with your mustang though. they just arent a very good platform to make real power with. i'd do a 383 stroker for the most power per dollor in a sbc. i'ts easy to get 400hp/400f#torq out of them.they make a really balanced motor.

Keep up the good work, the car looks like it's coming along.

As said before, porting is very involved and something you should research thoroughly before getting into.

I would love to have a 3rd Gen Camaro or Firebird with a 350 small block bored over .040", ~11.5:1 compression, aluminum heads, a good cam, 750 carb, and a 150 shot.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to get the motor running and broke in before I start any mods. I want to lay down some baseline numbers. I would like to make it an occasional daily driver but it will mainly be a strip car. I'm aware that the 305 isn't the greatest motor...but I got it for free and I'm going to run with it. I've done some research and the heads on it also went on some of the 350s in the 80s. So the heads aren't terrible. They do have a lot of slag and don't look machined well is the main reason I want them ported. The cam is also WEAK. The cam is probably the first mod I'm going to do.

I will probably get some mods done to it, be discouraged about it, sell it, and use that money to beef up my mustang...it just depends on how it treats me. Overall this car is a great learning experience. I'd rather mess up on a chevy than a ford!!!
