Pre-86 and post 86 SBC question

The cam in my 78 305ci died the other day ( intake lobe on #8 and exhaust lobe on #7 are completely rounded off ). Went to Discount auto parts an was planning to order a stock replacement ( which was going to be like $150 ). I started BS'in with the manager about just givin me the cam out of their display motor. I didnt look that hard at it and assumed it was a 350ci. He told me, "$100 and you can roll the whole cart out the door". WHat kinda fool wouldnt jump on that? The block was freshly dipped, both heads also dipped and one was bolted on the motor. From a quick glance, the motor needed an oil pump, oil pna, and intake/carb( which i have sittin here as a back up). The motor was bored .040 over too. I got it home and pulled the attatched head and they had only "slugged" one side of the motor! No biggie though, I snatched the cam out and stuck it in my 78 305.
I plan on finishing the build on the motor i just got today. I checked all the cast numbers and found out ( didnt think too look at the seal for the back side of the crank) its a post 86 block. And it is a 305 also.
My Question being, what will i need to put this motor into my 78 Monte Carlo? I have a Built TH350 tranny in there now. I know the bolt pattern on the Fly-wheel/ Flexplate is smaller on the newer blocks and they have to be externally balanced also. From what i can tell, im gonna need another starter and felxplate. Will my torque converter ( brand new 3200 stall) bolt to the newer generation flexplate? What are the differences in the older and newer blocks besides the crankshaft bolt patterns?
Oh, and by the way. Just the motor stand alone is worth over $100, not even mentioning that i still got the cam i needed! Advanced Disount Auto Parts kicks ass!!! lol
Just for the record, im building a 400 stroked SB to put in my Monte, but this 305 will hold me over till i get up enuff cash to finish my stroker.

not one thing! i have an 84sbc top(heads up) on an 88sbc bottom end. in 87 they used a different style intake. the four center holes(2 on each side) on the intake are at a different angle then the 86 older. other than that a 305 is a 305! no matter what year block!

i have an 85 chevy short wide with a 95 350 in it. the flywheel is different, the dust cover will need to be cut clear too. it is a one piece rear main, the heads have cantered center intake bolt holes, centerbolt valve covers, 64cc chambers, some of the 95 blocks were preped for a roller cam set up (mine is roller prepped ), some of the bocks do not have the hole drilled for a manual fuel pump, and i think that the timing tab is a different location. its been 7 years since i put it in, i cant remember if the old motor had a 10 o'clock tab because this motor is at 2 o'clock. the stall will bolt up and i dont remember changing my starter.

Yeah, there is a lil more involved than i want to take over doing. The heads are different, the crank bolt pattern ( and rear seal) are smaller. JUst too much to do a quickie build on. I was kinda thinkin it would be as easy as movin mah old parts to the newer motor ( seeing as CHeby is so notorious about everything fittin everything). I can say im now the proud owner of ANOTHER boat anchor! THe old 205's bottom rings are burnt though. STill have great compression but it has a nasty case of "blow by". THe plugs drip when you take them out!! lol ANybody want to buy a almost built 86-92 305???
