Ford Focus (2000)

Really I want to know about drum brakes. I have never worked on them myself, have only seen pops work on a set back in the day.

Terrible grinding/clanking noise coming from passenger rear from about 10mph+. Didn't have much time with the car yet but I guess brakes outright. This thing has almost 100k on it and the maintenance as far as I know has been non-existent. Car came from one of those AbC123 dealers...

I have a write-up so I was just looking for any general tips or advice as far as removing, repairing/replacing and maintaining drum brakes.

Gracias!

The drums on the Focus are pretty simple. Just follow the instructions to the word and you'll be fine. The spring can be a little bit of a pain though, just takes some patience. Is it just a clanking or is there a vibration with it?

get yourself a good set of drum brake plyers. if not then have a set of dikes and needle nose and vise grips and screw drivers. they really arent that hard. they are just a bunch of springs held to pins and the shoes. take both drums off and while you are doing one side reference to the other to see how things go

Thanks for the tips, it was actually the wheel bearing on one side. (Sure the others are headed out, but this one blown up). Literally the bearing came out in about 50 pieces when I removed the brake drum. New bearing, all good. The drum and the shoes didn't have too much wear, still had some life left so I just replaced the bearing.

Drum was simple enough to remove, but I'd prefer disc brakes anyday!

Ok, that's why I asked if there was vibration to it. The wheel bearings will go out somewhat easily on our cars. They're not a big problem but they aren't that hard to break. I was thinking it may be a bearing since there are some guys over on the Focus forums with 200k+ miles and still the stock rear drum brakes. They don't wear much.

Glad to see you got it fixed and hope you're enjoying the car. I love these little Ford hatchbacks.
