Raging and Confused

So today in class I was talking with the guy next to me who started to claim his friends 2009 335i sedan was beating Porsche 911's and that it had 380HP with a chip. The car comes stock with 300HP so I of course claim theres no way and we got into fighting a bit how I was claiming it wasn't true and his friends a moron but we kept fighting until I bet him $100 that it wasn't true and he agreed so I'm waiting the dyno results. So I'm looking up their specs now just to take a look at the car overall and apparently they're sitting at a 4.8 0-60 with a 300HP car that weighs 3616 lbs? I'm calling bullshit but most sites are agreeing with this. Someone clarify for me? Are the engines severely underrated and contain much higher HP than they claim? I'm just confused.

Those are not correct times.. They 0-60 in approx 5.3 secs.. But you may not realize the 335 is also a bi-turbo.

The E90 335 gets about the same 0-60 and 1/4 as the E46 M3.. (IE: the new body 335 gets the same times generally as the last generation M3)

If it is chipped, it may be getting better times due to timing, gear shift points, etc, the cars already run on 91 octane... So no gains there if it was chipped and even tuned..

(I stand corrected, the JB4 chip for the 335i does push approx 80hp to the wheels.. F**k!)

I'm an ex-bimmer fanatic and enthusiast, sorta why I sold mine and left that 'realm' is because BMW owners talk alot of shit.. Well.. It's not just bimmer owners, but yah they talk alotta shit..

Musta been running against an older 911, otherwise they are again dreaming chipped or not. Check this link and go ask them how old that 911 really was.

http://www.zeroto60times.com/Porsche...mph-Times.html

But seriously, I can kill a ferrari with my 2011 v6... (If it's a very old -Magnum PI model!)

It's all in semantics..

335i Sedan
3.0-liter inline-6 twin-turbocharged
300 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm
300 lb-ft of torque @ 1,200-5,000 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy:
335i Sedan: 19/28
335i xDrive Sedan: 19/26 (manual), 18/27 (automatic)
335i Coupe: 19/28
335i xDrive Coupe: 19/26 (manual), 18/27 (automatic)
335i Convertible: 19/28

Notice the 300 tq as well as the RPM it kicks in at (1200!) - inline engines are TORQUE BEASTS and it's also why most real BMW fanatics hate the new V8 M3 (Besides it being sorta slow..) Inline engines are always under-rated.. It ain't ALL hp ya know.

My old bimmer..

Fun, but slow.. Like riding on rails, but slow! (old 2000 323i fairly heavily modified but short of FI..)

I have heard of those turbo 3 series pulling 80-100 hp off of a tuned chip. My neighbor had one of those cars and I remember when he brought it back and showed me the Dyno, it knocked him up around 85hp. But it is more than just a chip, it is also tuned and something with unlocking some kinda of fail safe thing. It voids the warranty in other words if you do this, and there is no way to cover it up.

I stand corrected on that, as I did a little research myself and found this to be correct as well, JB4 chip puts approx 80hp to the wheels.. I'm impressed again with Bimmers, darn it... They lose alot less at the wheels than most RWD cars that's a under-stated fact as well.

But 80HP for a chip that apparently cost him under $1000? Like mid hundreds range?

Only if they made something like this for our cars lol. Wonder if this still voids the warranty.

I am absolutely sure it does, just putting a CAI and tune on any new car under warranty - kills the warranty (Thats the reason most tune boxes 'retain' the original ECU settings so you can slap them on again before you take it into the shop for 'warranty' work) Sneaky, but hey, that's how we do it on our cars with say, a cai and Bama tuner as well.

No one wants to discuss warranty, until the engine is a heapa slag...

On that note with a cai and bama tune and running a 91R tune.. You can cut about .5 off your 0-60, but we only gain approx 28-30 hp. (Talking '11-'12 v6's here, not completely sure of the gains on a GT/5.0).

Hate for the OP to lose $100 but he just might.. If it's really chip/tuned..

I genuinely don't believe that just a chip could increase the HP of a car by 85 I mean thats rediculous how come our cars can't do that? After discussing with some of my other friend who know some stuff about cars that just seems utterly rediculous theres no way that I actually believe that.

Because that car has turbos, a big difference from our cars. The chip pretty much opens up the turbo system. Just like the eco boost engine ford makes. It is a turbo and I have heard people pulling 60 more hp out of that engine with a chip. Im sure it will increase as that motor becomes more popular.

One of my buddies has an 09 335i that is chipped, and he claims he got 50+ hp out of it. Though I'm not sure if it does, he hasn't dyno'd it or anything yet

Indeed.. I recall with my old 323i which matched with Audi's A4 at the time, that they could chip their cars (Audi) and put 50-60hp more at the wheels, and that was to a 11 year old 1.8l turbo'd A4.

I talked to him again today, he's claiming a 4.3 0-60, he said he added 2 lbs of boost with the chip which makes me able to understand a bit better the horsepower gain, but there is no way in hell that car is making Boss 302 times.
