T type

My buddy is looking into rebuilding his 1979 T Type. He bought it and the next week it started to get a severe rod knock. I see there is a difference in the 79 and late 80s in power. Would any of this be due to the internals such as compression ratio and etc.
I am sure they are the same, but any block differences between the years?

I know the mid 80s versions of GNs had forged internals and the fuel injection changed to sequential and went to distributorless ignition which was way more efficient than the previous generations.

Camshaft profiles as well i think. Yea the rebuild kit he found is essentially a stock replacement kit and it is not forged.

Has he thought about swapping out a later model 3.8 from a supercharged buick? Those make as much if not more power and accept upgrades nicely. Might actually be cheaper to go a low mileage newer model motor than put a bigger turbo on it (obviously swapping out intakes etc to do the swap).

If he's just flipping it he might be able to get a crank kit and get it going for cheap.

He can probably rebuild the oil pump for cheap too as long as the housing isn't too scored/scratched. If he does, upgrade the spring to boost oil pressure if needed.

If I remember correctly the 86&87 cars had a slightly different design in the heads, and the deck height of the block was different, as well as everything else you guys mentioned. I have owned several T-types and GNs, but it has been over 10 years ago.

Well I knew the blocks were different somewhere because the 79-85? Has a 14 bolt oil pan. He was talking about putting a 350 in, I personally think that is a shitty idea.

Forget the 3.8 and go with an LS1!
