1990 Ranger Fuel Gauge

Car was at 1/4 tank, I filled it up all the way, and drove over to my friend's house which is a mile away from the gas station.
I didn't look at the gauge at all after pumping.
On the drive home, I noticed that the gauge was only at 3/4.

What are some things I should check?

I should also mention that I "borrowed" a fuse from the truck that day for my friend's car, which we were working on that day.
I got home really late, and forgot to replace the fuse that night.
I did it a few days later when I finally remembered.
The fuse was for the information lights on the dash, so I doubt it would have anything to do with my problem, but just wanted to make sure.

My dad noticed the gauge not working on his way to work, but I'm not sure if the truck had the fuse in it that day.

Any ideas?

I know that Ford used to have a problem

I know that Ford used to have a problem with fuel sending units. Especially on the Full size trucks with duel tanks. Perhaps they had issues with other models as well................. I had one that I had to change the fuel sending unit. It had 2 tanks, I only changed one, and said screw the other tank, I just used it as a reserve anyway.

Does the gauge sometimes read full sometimes read empty. That would be a ground issue. If you are getting 1/4 full/3/4 etc, etc etc, than I would guess the fuel sending unit is bad. It is really fun to change if it is in the tank............................

That's my 2 cents

Let us know what you find out

Thanks, I'll look at that when the truck is here and I have some time.

Update: the gauge is not reading full, and has been for the past few days.

That means it's probably an electrical error, right?
Where should I look, and what should I look for?

I also checked all the fuses, they're all fine.

Thank you for your help.

I still think it is the fuel sending unit

I still think it is the fuel sending unit.

Reading full or reading empty would be a sign of a bad ground.

I would say you have a bad sending unit:

Time for fun:

Pull the tank, disconnect the wires/hoses, carefully remove the fuel pump and sending unit, install new sending unit/fuel pump/screen/replace tank

rinse and repeat :-)

I looked around and found that, the cheapest.
What is the second item on that list?

Again, thank you for your help.

Strainer is just a pre-filter in the tank

Strainer is just a pre-filter in the tank. Looks like a flat Tampon LOL It is just a mesh screen for keeping large crap out of the pump/gauge. I would just replace the fuel sending unit if it was me

All of it will come out as one unit in the tank

I saw your post before you edited, do you think Autozone would have it in stock?

The local parts store said they can order it for $130, so I'm probably going to order it online.

Should I be getting the first or second item here?
