I had the same problem out of my 1996 bonneville. but you could have a different culprit. I had a bad ground, yes a bad ground, behind the driver side kick panel. This ground goes to the fuel pump and the power windows. it caused my fuel pump to quit working then start working so fast that my car backfired. then my pump completely quit working. I think that this ground also connects to the ECM.

I am confused too. The 1996 pontiac bonneville had a 3800 series 2 engine. It is a 90 degree v-6. it has one cam in the block, not overhead cams. the bonneville was never offered with DOHC. nor are there any aftermarket heads that will allow a swap to use DOHC, so either your car has an engine swap or you are mistaken.
