84 Silverado

So its been missing really bad when in drive and at idle. So i bumped the timing just barely, and it seems to be running much better. Anyway can i harm it at all? I made it do it idles just a hair higher. Anyway ujslost and boomer know i cant use a timing light because it has teh wrong damper on it(stupid shop that swaped the 350 in for the 305), but it sounds to be running better too. Any harm i can do by just bumping the timing just a little? There is no pinging what so ever. May be a stupid question, but i never really have messed with timing all that much except with a timing light.

yah u wont hurt it bumping it a few degrees. but uve band-aid fixed it. you should really figure out what the misfire is all about. maybe bad plugs/wires or distributor cap.

I know, I know,

Its been a POS ever since we got it back witht eh motor swap done! Leaks oil everywhere, doesnt run right. And it has new plugs, new wires, and next on the list is cap. So maybe ill get one of those here soon. THis is my DD now so... It does need to be fixed!

take the distributor off and look for cracks or carbon trails. that would cause a miss or 2

Well i can only feel the miss at a really low RPM. Doesnt have a tach, but I would think around 1100 or less. It feels fine other than that.

could be a vacuum leak. bumping the timing shouldn't hurt it much. sounds like you've retarded it a little. as long as it doesn't have any problems starting you should be alright. just make sure it doesnt run hot. if it starts running hot make sure you put it back to where it was. and you dont have to have a timing light. just rotate the engine till you get to the desired timing mark, probably somwhere around 10 degrees before top dead center, then use an ohm meter or test light and hook it to the wire that goes from the coil to the distributer. now loosten the distributer and move it until the light/ohme meter comes on.

No i have a timing light infact 3 of them, but the tards taht swaped motors in it said we didnt need a different damper, but aperantly we do 305 to 350 swap. And it doesnt seem to be a vaccum leak, everything is hooked up and nothing is dry rotted, i have checked that.

Carbed

spray a can of carb cleaner in the bitch maybe its dirty and sticking, i have a feeling its a distributor issue...... but could also be low compression, or the timing was off, or a head gasket.

It has gotten 1 new head gasket since it was swapped ( 1000 miles ago but 1.5 years ago) and its gott compression, so i guess ill pull the dizzy out here when i get time.

And carb is clean!

lol

dont know for sure, but it does have a vaccum advance on it.

and i dont think is the carb, unless its running lean being it was the carb that came off of the 305 and the 350 needs that much more. I dont htink it was rejetted.

i'd check the idle adjustments on the carb and check the gap/contacts on the points..

opps sorry read your post wrong thought it was a '94.....no need to pull battery cable...you have an HEI.....is your vaccum advance dist? do you have the factory quadujet on it? if so you can't adjustment idle mixture unless you drill the plugs

one way to check for vac leaks is with a plumbers torch turn it on not lit and trace your vac lines it will rev up if its leaking something in the ignition is my bet cap rotor wires plugs all of them are cheap fixes and a decent place to start
