it's never really going to be a powerhouse without a different motor in her.
I would do rims and such on it.

2.0 SPI from a 97+ Escort SE would bump the horsepower up some and give it more pep. Then, if you can do some fab work, a small turbo and some tuning could net you upwards of 170 to the wheels.

Best bet with a car like that is to do suspension. You're not going to be able to make big power, so do the most with what you've got. (look at the above post - fab work + turbo to get you 170hp? is that really worth it?)
First things first, a good set of shocks will make a good foundation. You can get KYB GR2s from sparkplugs.com for about $200 for all four corners. Next, hunt yourself down some springs, try not to get too rediculous with your drop, which means anything over 2" is out. Next I'd be checking for poly bushings, I got a prothane kit for a Corolla, you should be able to find one for your Escort. Then I'd look at brakes. I'm partial to Porterfield pads, get their street compound, anything else will just eat your rotors. I should interject here, whatever you do, don't put a big set of heavy-ass wheels on that car. That's the quickest way to kill performance, especially a small FWD. 17s may look nice, but unless you get some ultra-lights, you're just gonna waste the little power you have turning those big monsters. The other thing to look at is other cars that use that motor. Escorts were basically Mazdas, find if there's any Mazdas that use that engine, and see what performance parts were available for it. The only other thing I'd suggest is a K&N (FIPK if you can get it), and a 2" cat-back with a fairly open muffler. I went with a glass-pack myself, as it's basically just an open pipe. Hope that helps!

But what do I know, I've only seen it done 4-5 times. As for the fabrication work, I don't know I haven't owned an escort for almost 5 years, so there may be a turbo manifold for a 2.0 SPI. The 2.0 SPI will drop directly in and will even bolt to the 91-96 LX 5 speed. It can be swapped in an hour or less. That's not a whole hell of a lot of work, and you can get the engine for under a grand. Another grand or less for turbo, suspension (not KYB GR2 cheapy CRAP) with tires, fast sleeper. Don't do rims and this and that. It's just making it look like a ricey POS. |

2300 lbs? I didn't realize they were that light. I thought they were up around 2800 lbs. (I double checked, and you're absolutely right, stock they were about 2350). That being the case, 170 hp would definitely scoot.
I still don't know that it would be worth $2K to do though, considering you could take that money, sell the car for $2K, have $4K, and buy one of a dozen better platforms to start with. I was assuming that the OG poster would be in the same situation that I usually am, where they maybe have $500 or so at a time to do mods with. And I only suggested KYBs as something that I know I could get that was better than Kragen/Autozone shocks (i.e. sensa-tracs). I know there's much better out there, but wasn't sure what would be available for an early 90s Escort, nor where to get it.

burning is so unsatisfactory. Blow it up or crash up derby it. Save up money and instead of making mods move your battery too the trunk, take out all your glass, put on a 5 point harness and crash up derby it. Then junk it plus money for mods= better car to mod out with more options. I know you're going to keep it just think it would be pretty funny to see, im kinda sad I couldn't find a derby track to kill my old 88 celeb in
