96 Jeep A/C compressor Q
my girl has a 96 Jeep Cherokee sport, 4.0L. i started to hear a chirping sound come from the engine and thought it was the belt. i have sinced changed the belt and the sound is still there. after almost buring my ear off, i think i have narrowed it down the A/C compressor. its a chirping sound that sometimes does it alot or doesn't do it at all.. it sounds like a bad bearing.?.? can this be fixed without having to buy a new one. i price checked them today and they want $250 for a rebuit one and $400 for a new one, without shipping. i don't want to do that UNLESS i have to. the A/C still blows cold air like it was brand new... any suggestion or answers would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks, Jimmy |

The chirping is probably coming from the compressor clutch, pretty sure you can buy those seperatly.

Lol, well just so you know the clutches are usually at least half the cost of the compressor. You'll probably still spend a bill or two.

i think i got lucky.. someone finally responded back on the geek forum. they said that belt was most definilty not tight enough. they said you have to tighten the shit out of them... well, i did and so far so good. i gave everything i had in tightening that bitch down.. i almost stripped the bolt... the real test will be tomorrow morning when i first start her up.. thats when it usually does it the worst... they did say that if its not the belt that it would be the clutch... i am hoping this works... thanks again for the info Joe!
