429ing up a 79 Zepher Wagon
It has a 200 inline six in it right now, and I am guessing a 7.5 rear axle.
I have a sweet built 429 with all kinds of goodies to drop in it. Wondering what kind of transmission I should use,(Truck C6, Car C6, C4 with big block bell housing, etc.) I gather too that I will need a V8 cross member from some kind of a fox body. Its going to be a quarter mile car / weekend cruiser. (You Have To Drive Em'!!! )Has anyone messed around with such a project as this? I am open to all kinds of ideas! Thanks!!! Mike |

It will be a unique combination. I like the idea. The Zepher is based on the fox body platform so alot of Mustang swap parts (k-member, oil pan, headers, rear end, etc.) are interchangeable. A powerglide or Turbo 400 like HMUSN said is the way to go for the transmission. 11s shouldn't be a problem.

Any reason for the Turbo 400 over a good C6? It seems like a C6 should be strong enough, and you wouldn't have to go chasing down custom parts to make it fit.
Just curious.

Thanks for the suggestions! I picked up the little Zephyr Wagon a couple of years ago thinking that it would make a neat little beater car,....ugly as can be, and it cost me 80 bucks, so I drove it home, and parked it with a few of my other projects. My brother has a 2 door Zephyr that he picked up years ago that he has been talking about stuffing a sbf 331 stroker in it for about two years. Being the big brother I figured I can't let him beat me so I thought what if I put my 429 in my wagon?! Its uglier, making it more of a sleeper, and like you said it is based on a fox body design so upgrades should be do-able!
I like the odd and unusual stuff, and this car screams out "Sleeper!" I just recently picked up sub frame connectors, and the fox body 429/460 swap oil pan and motor mounts. I am not sure what headers to go with yet though, I have available some hooker 460 fox headers that a neighbor has and is wanting to sell to me, or I wonder if I should go with some awesome Kooks Headers that I found at "racingjunk.com"? The Kooks headers are 2&1/8" primaries with 4" collectors. They should breath well and sound pretty great to! The power glide trans has been a thought that I have been toying with, seeing it is such a proven racing transmission, but like was pointed out adapting is a little bit more of a challenge, unless someone has one already set up for this application. A friend of mine who runs lots of 460's in his mud bog trucks takes his C6's to a guy who "rolerizes" them. Claiming it makes them a lot more efficient. Still I'm not sure what to choose! Let me know if I'm off in insanity with my ideas! I Feel The Need To Go FAST! ![]() Thanks Again! Mike |

A Little Bit Of My History.
I built my first truck from parts, it is a 78 F150 Ranger XLT (Full Size). It had a badly knocking 351M in it and a 4spd standard trans. Black with red int. I yarded out the tired 351M and stuck in a 429CJ that I picked up from a guy who gave up on his Torino project, scored the car and the 429 with C6 for a song! The 429 was a little fun to get in right, but finally after getting the proper parts, it fit in perfectly, and was shredding tires all through High School!!! Fastest truck in town! I was hooked on big cubes from then on! My first car that I still own also is a 72 Mercury Cougar XR7. It needed a lot to get it going, a complete rebuild of both engine and transmission. Those being a 351C with a C6 trans. It lays awesome rubber, and it rides nice to! I'll attach some pic's of both of these units sometime on here. Since then I have continued collecting a ton of neat old Fords. A 56 F100, 56 Crown Vic, 71 and 72 Ford Torino's, 73, and 83 Cougars, a 71 Pinto (Hope To Make A 1/4 Miler), F-Series from 60's though 70's (Around 12 or so), a Model T 5 Window, 94 Cougar XR7 Special Edition w/a 4.6, 97 P71 Crown Vic, 2002 Super Duty Crew Cab 4X4 w/a 7.3, 69 Ford Galaxy 2dr w/a 351W, etc, etc, etc. Sorry about the long posts, just thought I would let you know what I work with, so you might better understand my insanity with the FoMoCo obsession. I am also a 25 year old guy with not nearly enough time for all of these projects, still I keep collecting, and building, and racing! The Zephyr is a must get done for this summer though! There is a Monte Carlo, and a 69 Dart GT that need a little butt kicking here in town!!! Might I add, our small time town is building a racers dream, paved and dirt oval tracks, mud bog pit, motocross track, demo derby arena, and the best part is a heated concrete 1/4 mile track! Check it out at: Welcome to Central Alberta Raceways at Rimbey, Alberta ! Now You Know What I'm Up To!!! Let Me Know What You Think About This Too If You Like! Sorry again about the long posts!!! Should be shorter now! Mike |

Anyone know how the KOOKS headers work? Are they worth the extra$ over the Hooker headers?
How do they fit? Thanks |

C6s are heavy and soak up alot of horsepower. TH400s are more efficient and stronger. The parts to put a GM trans in a Mustang are plentiful. There is no chasing necessary.

I just found a trans builder that rolerises (Spelling, Sorry) C6's. They warranty them to around a thousand horse power, the use about the same horse power as a C4. And they come with a bullitproof trans brake for $2,000. What do you think? Idea's?

If that were true everyone would be using a C6. Think about it. If a C6 could be built to consume the power that a C4 does then nobody would use a C4. Everyone rollerizes every automatic transmission these days so that isn't anything new that this specific transbuilder invented. I'd be looking for a TH400 but its your car and you can put a C6 in it if you insist.
