Take it apart, blueprint it, rebuild it and sell it. Have fun this is the best way to learn. Look at every part and learn how to use a Mic, torque wrench, set tolerances. Have Fun!

you definitely need someone there who knows what theyre doing so they can explain how things work. But make sure you're still getting your hands dirty and that person is not doing all the work. Have you heard the phrase practice makes perfect, unless you're practicing wrong. Well this is the perfect case.

id look for some kind of basic engine tech books. You need to know the basics of the engine. Intake-Compression-Power-Exhaust. You gotta know the basic parts. Camshaft, Lifters, Crankshaft, Pistons, Heads, Valves, Pushrods, etc....
Thats the mechanical side of it. That was the easiest for me to understand. The toughest for me was the electrical. Ive never been a fan of wires.

One of the books that taught me everything was a book that my dad had from his engine building days.

Its called:

Automotive Engine Repair
a text-lab manual

It's from the Glencoe Automotive Technology Series

it's written by Ivan D. Hinerman

clearly one of the best books out there about teaching anything with the engine. It was written in 1980 but everything still applies(cept for fuel injection and the rest of the changes that have happend in the last 27 years lol) but it will definitely help you learn about the basics of the engine. I'll take a look for a good book on ebay for you.

Howstuffworks "How Car Engines Work" Awesome site to learn the basics of what goes on in an engine. Even if you know that stuff, you could still learn something new

I learn not from reading but doing. Go get a 302 out of the junkyard or something and tear it down and put it back together a bunch of time to get a understanding. After you get the hang of it have someone who knows what they're doing give you a few extra tips.

Get the factory shop manual. Not a chilton or Haynes. The FSM will probably run you $100, but it's bar-none the best way to get an idea of what you're doing and how to do it properly. The ford one's I've worked with will even have the part numbers of any specialty tools required to do a job.

Isnt that written for shops tho or is it for anyone? Im just wondering if it will take into account that he's not a shop owner or anything and he probably doesnt have a whole shop full of tools that ford would want you to have.
