New Competition: 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Officially Unveiled

Chevrolet today officially unveiled the new ZR1 Corvette to the masses. Powered by the much anticipated LS9 engine and boosted by a positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger - this 6.2 liter engine is expected to bust the 600 horsepower barrier wide open.

yeah, but look at the price tags of the two. the corvette is slowly going out of the muscle car category and into the supercar

That thing looks like a transformer (and that's not necessarily a bad thing).

And Mustangs and Corvettes have never really been competing vehicles. Maybe while the Camaro is out of production it seems that way, but I've yet to see a Mustang that could take a Corvette in a 1/4 AND beat it in the twisties. And I've never seen a Corvette that could hold 4 people legally.

That, and Corvettes aren't Musclecars. Musclecars are mid-size sedans with a high-power, large displacement engine, usually a V8. Hell, the Mustang technically isn't a musclecar, as it's not a sedan bodystyle; it's a coupe (which is different from a 2-door sedan), which makes it a Ponycar.

All that being said, I think that ZR1 was the wrong badging for this car. The cool thing about the original ZR1s was the DOHC engine. Yes, it's very cool, but I think SS would have been more appropriate.

Since someone just recently took a z06 with stock everything into the 10.8xs I really think this Vette might be capable of 9s bone stock.

When will car makers decide to make a really lightweight car ? Granted that's not really heavy, but it's not much lighter than general cars today go. Another thing: American supercar ? 600horsepower beast isn't a supercar with leather interior, satellite navigation (I assume), a 73 disc cd changer...as long as they throw all those extras in, the Corvette will never be more than a sports car. A really fast, super sexy, give-me-happy-time-in-pants sports car.

i consider it to be a supercar with extras.. most people considered the z06 to be a supercar, and if the ZR1 beats it in every category like chevy says it will, there is no doubt that it is a supercar..

IMO, a car doesn't have to be stripped of its luxuries, come from an italian country, have 750hp, and cost $300,000+ to be a supercar

this corvette is as much of a supercar as any lamborghini i have ever seen

Personally I believe the Corvette is in a different class than the Mustang. The Camaro was the Mustang's equal on the market. If you take horsepower/monetary value, the Mustang has this $100,000+ ZR1. Wait until 2009 when the horsepower war continues...Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang on the market together.

Supercars can't/don't have leather and accessories???? I beg to differ.
