I know they came with either a 5.7 L or a 6.0L V8, and have a ton of horsepower, and I want one, but can't afford it.

Well I have one. I like it, a lot. Its very comfortable on the inside. A very unassuming car on the outside. If what a car that says hey look at me this isn't it, especially not the 04s that only have the exhaust on one side and no hood scoops. 04s 350hp/365tq 5.7L LS1 pushrod V8, redline at 6k, 05-06 400hp/400tq 6.0L LS2 pushrod V8, redline at 6500. They either have a 6 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic. 04s run the 1/4 in the mid to high 13s stock and 05-06s run low to mid 13s stock.

They suck at launching at the track because of their independent rear suspension and other things. But the IRS allows it to be a comfy daily driver. From a roll they are beasts. The trunk is borderline non-existent because the gas tank is in the car instead of under. They weigh 3725lbs which is like 300 lbs more than a current Mustang GT but get 16mpg city and 23mpg highway, compared to the Mustang GT's 15mpg city and 23 highway. Anything else you want to specifically know about feel free to ask me.

Is there anything i should look for when buying a gto?

Well as things currently stand you might be able to get an 04 for 15-17k in good condition. You should just look for leaks and everything else you would on a used car you're looking to buy. Also check the inside side of tires some gtos have a habit of the tires rubbing on the struts. Nothing some suspension work won't fix, but still look out for it.

Buying an 04 will be cheaper leaving you with more mod money, but...with the 05-06s you get 50 more hp and 35 more tq, and better brakes. My personal advice is if you could get an 05. It would have the better brakes and engine, it would be cheaper than an 06, and if you ever want to do the gauge pod on top of the center console all you would have to do is plug in some cables rather than tape them together. BTW the 04 brakes aren't awful. They just suck next to the 05-06s. Also if money is a convern the 04s get marginally better gas mileage.

Thats because most people can't drive them, mine has yet to go to the track, but the ls2 gtos should run low 13s and high 12s on DRs and ls1 gtos mid/high 13s and low/mid 13s on DRs.

Also heavy is relative, they weigh 3725 curb weight, about 200lbs less than a gt500, and about 250lbs more than a s197 gt.

Not a fan of the souped up grand prixs they are ugly IMO. Typical LS1 tho. Will outrun a stock GT but not a Termi

No not yet, cops are pretty lenient here about that. There are soooo many cams to look into there isn't just one that is raved about.

LS2 GTO's are nice and road beast! they will eat up stock or mildly modded S197's. They also have great interior, well its way better then the GT's interior.

The interior is the only thing I like. The shifter is teribale talk about the longest throw on the planet. I think my 95 F-150 with a 5 speed manual has a shorter throw than an 04 GTO

I would love to have a GTO but insurance being that much for a car in general is just insane... mine is less then 600 for 6 months
