the more low end power you have will get you up to speed faster so you dont have to punch the gas

There was actually a study of aerodynamic drag on vehicles conducted by Ford Motor Co. down in AZ about two years ago and a few people from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, including myself, helped test certain "gas guzzlers" for fuel efficient modes of travel...

A myth that needs to be broken is that it is better on gas to roll down your windows on the freeway to keep the a/c off. Ford backed our test results and is now posting helpful gas-saving tips in magazines across the US. Anyway to break the myth - rolling down your windows causes under 9m/s(s) (ie, the force of gravity ) when traveling at speeds under 40 mph and is therefore beneficial to have your windows down rather than run a/c at those speeds. However above 40mph, it became very detrimental and hurt our test vehicles over 5mpg when compared to having the windows up and the a/c on.

sorry if it got kinda long and confusing there, I'll stop now

They also did that twice on Mythbusters... it was a good episode (both of them). The first time they did it they had a ton of viewers right in with more suggestions so they had to do it again and they busted the myth I think.

The first thing I'd do is a full tune up. Plugs, wires, filters, fresh oil. Making sure you don't OVERfill your crankcase will free up a few horses, as your crank doesn't have to slosh through as much oil. Synthetic gear oils in the diffs and transfercase are supposed to free up a couple ponies, too.

Underdrive pulleys aren't gonna do crap for your mileage. To get good fuel economy, you need to keep your rpms down, and pulleys don't really help at low rpm. Also, on an SUV where you might be taking it off road, do you really want to be slowing down your water pump?

Depending on your driving, gears may actually help your fuel economy. If you have a lot of freeway driving, keep 'em high, but if you're on surface streets a lot, or stay under 60, being low geared allows you to keep your rpms down. My corolla has 3.91s in it, and I get about 25 on the freeway, 28 in the city. Yes, I actually get better gas mileage around town than on open road!

So, hope that helps!

Sorry, I looked at this and wanted to clarify - with the low gears in the diff, you can be in a higher gear in the transmission, thus keeping your rpms down. Regarding my prior example, I can be in 4th gear in my Corolla in a 35, and turning about 2K rpm. The lower gears allow me to drive between 2K and 2500 (as long as I'm on flat ground) on surface streets.

Again, hope that helps!
