Thunderbird Turbo Coupe

How many of you know much about these or own one? According to the EPA, they barely get better gas mileage than my 8 cylinder new edge GT, yet they are a turbocharged 2.3 4 cylinder any thoughts on why this is or how many of you fair on gas mileage with these cars? I'm looking to get a good gas mileage dd with a little pep in it's step and I've been eying these lately. Thanx.

I'd ask this in the 2.3L section. The TurboCoupes are basically just heavier SVOs that don't handle as well.

depends on your definition of "good mileage".

My suggestion on a good, peppy, fun DD is anything with a 4A-GE: 1st gen MR2, Corolla Sport GT-S (came in both FWD and RWD flavors), or a Corolla FX16.

1st gen MR2 is anything pre-1989
RWD Corollas were made up through '87 - the ones you'd be looking at are the 85-87 GTS (ae86 chassis). These are waaay overpriced due to being high in demand by drifters. Expect to pay over $3k for a clean one (though you can get the carb'd SOHC SR5 version for about $500, I had one and loved it for a DD, poly bushings made it a wee bit stuff).
The FWD corollas (ae92 chassis) are '88 and '89, and the last of the 2-door corollas.
The FX16 is also a FWD, made in the mid-80s, I think 86-89. Basically it's the toyota equivalent of a Civic Si Hatch.

what's cool is the Toyota 4A-GE is just a copy of a Ford Cosworth motor (much how the old Landcruiser motor is a copy of the old chevy I6).

1st gen MR2s can be found in a factory supercharged version, too.

the new pontiac solstice gxp's have the turbo 2.0l 4cyl with 260 hp 260 tq and get 19 city and 28 highway. they pack a punch, theyre quick, a vert which is fun, available as a 5spd auto or manual, and get good milage.

3rd gen Eclipses are CRAP. And there was no tubo 4-cylinder offered - they switched to the optional motor being a V6.

If you want an eclipse, do yourself a favor and get the Turbo AWD 2nd gen.
