Your Jesus if you can figure this out
I have an 89 lebaron turbo auto. Its my DD and winter beater. Four months ago, i shifted into first going <5 MPH, i dont know why i did but i did. It must have been in 2nd cause it downshifted very hard into first. Ever since then, i have the following symptoms.
-Car wont shift into 2nd until 1g after it should have -car wont shift into 3rd until about 750 after it should have -if i put the car into first gear, the gas pedal will only go down about 1/2 inch and hit stops, if i put it into 2nd, the pedal will go down about one inch, and increase for D, and N. If i put it into 1st, smash the gas, forcing it past the "stopping point", my shifter will actually shift from 1 to N, going right through the 2, and 3 positions. I figured out that there is a cable going from my throttle body, to my transmission. What is this cable? and wtf did i do to this car. - If i put the car in 2nd for a start, the car will start in 1st gear, and shift into 2nd only slightly delayed, and then i shift to drive where it will only shift into drive after 36 MPH. I hope you are still reading.... I dont think i hurt anything in the tranny, because it hasnt gotten worst. This isnt really a problem, because i save gas by not being able to "get on it", but pulling into traffic is a bitch cause the turbo is practically useless. The engine runs strong, and the car has 0 rust and is just plain fun to drive, minus this bullshit. If you can figure it out, you are a fucking genius. |

yea, i assume somthing is wrong with that cable, but it runs from the tranny to the throttle body and doesnt come in contact with anything else. I am just trying to figure it out if its a problem in the tranny.

Not Jesus, either. But the cable you are describing is what they call the kick down cable. It tells the tranny to downshift when you mash the gas to pass someone or need to speed up quickly. Sounds like the bracket (throttle body end or tranny end, not sure which) is bent and out of alignment. Another possibility is the cable is stretched, and is not performing like it is supposed to.

If it was bound up with the shift linkage, that would also explain why it's pulling your shifter forward when you press the gas pedal: as you press, the linkage starts pulling, which is bound up with the shifter linakge, which shifts the car up a gear.
