How AM screwed me

Just to warn everyone, should you find yourself in this position...

I bought some 17x9 rims for my 2000 v6 convertible from AM. When I brought them to my shop (a national chain, not some fly-by-night place) to get them mounted and some nice Michelins put on, the first tire that was mounted was the front right. When the wheel was turned the tire rubbed so badly that it would probably cause a major problem while driving. They unmounted it and advised me to get 17x8 instead. I called AM and was advised to mount it back up and lower the car to see if the same would happen when driving. Sure enough it did.

When I called back I was told that it was now too late at night - the return needed to be authorized by a manager because 1 rim was mounted, but it was only a formality. I should order the 17x8s and they could process the return tomorrow and please call back then. So I ordered the 17x8s and replaced the tire order with 245s. Well, many calls over the course of a month+ later and somehow the manager that needs to approve the return is never around and i should always call back or they will leave him a message to call me back.

So I am out hundreds of dollars, which is a shame, more for them as I was going to spend that and more on other mods for the car. $500 is not going to break me or mean a whole hell of a lot in the long run, except to mean that I am no longer a customer of theirs and will be telling this story to whomever will listen.

Sorry that you weren't satisfied with AM's service. My personal experience has been nothing but excellent with AM and I'm sure you could find hundreds more that have had good dealings with them. I bought a set of chrome DD bullits 2 years ago and they are still rolling strong. I've also bought HID's and a shorty antenna from them. No problems over here to report.

I am wondering why the 17X9's didn't fit correctly. Is your car dropped? Did you tell AM exactly what you were putting the wheels on and how much it is dropped (if any) before placing an order? This just seems like an off the wall problem. I deal with a ton of Mustangs and I would never suspect the 17X9's to be a problem on a new edge. What are you not telling us?

I had 18x9s on the front and had no such issue. Something is missing... Plus my car is lowered.

17X9's should fit just fine. Unless you are running a 2 inch drop and 285's on the front. 275's in the front with steeda sport springs only rubbed when I went lock to lock.

Thats really odd about their customer service, because in the last 11 months i've spent somewhere around 5 grand threw them. Never ever ever had a bad experience from them.. But on the other hand, sorry to hear about your bad luck man! i hope your new rims n tires look good!

There is nothing I am not telling you. The car is stock except for a few knobs and the sound system. The tire shop was costco - I have been using them for well over a decade. I know little to nothing about rims and tires, so I had to go by what I was told. I held nothing back here.

I got some 18x9, 265/35 fronts and 18x10 305/35 rears from them and had no issues. Are you trying to put the wrong size tire on for that rim width?

The rubbing issue is not AM's fault. They sold you perfectly fine wheels. It would be a courtesy of them to allow you to return the wheels.

I still can't see where AM was at fault anywhere. I would have recommended the same wheel size to the OP and I am working on new edge Mustangs every day of the week. I have never felt as if anyone at AM was not familiar with the products they sell. There has got to be something that the OP isn't telling us or simply doesn't know about himself. If anyone was suspect in this case, I would lean towards Costco- I doubt that anyone would be working at Costco during the pinnacle of their career.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your wheels. Without knowing more information, I can only speculate to what the problem may have been. If you can PM me your full name and/or order number I can look into this for you.

It is very odd that a 17x9 would rub on a stock 2000 V6 unless the incorrect tire size was used, or the car was lowered beyond 2", or the suspension or alignment was somehow greatly out of spec. We have literally sold thousands of wheels to V6 Mustang owners in this size and larger without rubbing problems.

I'm not sure if I would consider Costco a specialized tire shop btw. I'm not knocking Costco, I have a Costco membership myself because I like good cheap food and household goods, but they are just a wholesaler. Just like going to Walmart, Sams Club, etc. to get your automotive work done, you might not get the most specialized tire service there. For your vehicle they would only have what their computer's have listed for the stock tire size, so they would have to calculate on their own what tire size to use. It is very possible the larger wheels threw them for a loop and they may have not been using the proper up-sized tire for the non-factory wheels on your car. This can be a problem for shops like this that are not used to dealing with performance aftermarket parts.

Either way, definitely PM me your full name and/or order number and I will look into this for you and get to the bottom of it.

Thanks,

Nick
