Good Home Protection Gun?

So I will prob. be living off campus next year, and it is scary! Where there is alot of affordable housing but its kinda of a magnet for less desirables. About 4 months ago we had a shooting in town on the street, break ins are common, and so im worried about getting robbed, or someone going crazy just need back up. Ive been around guns since I was in 6th grade, been shooting since then and Now im 19 and will be 20 by the time I live of campus. I will prob also be taking a course at either glock or sig academy, both of which my dad has done, to understand how to shoot under stress, understand laws, and when I should shoot. But Im wondering what gun I should get. Personally, I do not Like sigs or glocks, ive shot both, hated both. I hated the glock because it was to light, and I didnt like the sig because of the double action trigger, But I really like my dads Para Ordnance 1911 .40 S&W Full size. What do you guys think would be good for home defense that is not a rifle.

But Honestly, what Im worried about is over kill, because its not like its my house and its a gonna be a big house, prob one floor, 3 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and a bathroom, not a 2 story house, and a shotgun would be to big, for how small the house would be.

Pretty much anything that will be powerful enough for defense wont be stopped by walls.

but a shotgun is over kill, no matter if im shooting buckshot or slugs, .40 would be what I want, maybe a 9mm maybe but I highly doubt I want it.

The important point is that you're comfortable with whatever it is though. You need to have your HD gun be a gun that you are familiar with the controls on, you know what the recoil will be like, and that you practice with on a regular basis. If you ever find yourself in a situation that you have to defend yourself and your family, you need to have as few variables as possible.

Sorry but a shotgun isn't too much for that scenario of a house.

How could you even say that without ever even shooting one?

A 9 or 40 is going to travel farther than a shotgun. A shotgun is perfect for HD. Under stress/ low light/ after being woken up in the middle of the night, you'd be more effective with a shotgun than pistol.

Check your local/state laws and get something with a 18 inch barrel if you can legally and you can maneuver through a house just fine.

i saw a tv show that said a shotgun (with birdshot) was actually the safest choice in a home between many other options. Pistols, rifles, etc. evidently the birdshot would only make it through one wall or something like that whereas pistols went through many walls. i cant remember the specifics, but it said a shotgun with bird shot was the safest choice in a home regarding not hurting other people other than who youre engaging.

12 Gauge, it'll stop anyone or anything that is not welcome in your house. Pistols are great too, just make sure you have hollow points.
