cutting my antenna?

Will it hurt my reception much if I cut the stock antenna down to 14"? I figured I'd do this instead of buy a 14" one online. To be honest, I'm cheap. I'd have to probably spray the tip of it and smooth it out, I don't really care about that.

Good idea or not?

I cut mine down to about 18" and didn't notice a difference. I popped the ball off with a pair of vice grips, cut the antenna with a hacksaw, glued the ball back on, and spray painted the tip black again (from where it got beat up taking it off). Looks great and didn't cost anything.

I cut mine off to 18". Reception was affected, but I do live in the outlying area of the city, with mountains around me. When I'm in the city reception is fine.

I posted about this on another thread. Goto your local Pull A Part. I found a mast from a late model Ford which fit the bill. It was $1.00. I pulled off the ball, cut it down to 14", glued the ball back on and painted it flat black with a rattle can. Viola. Shortie antenna for cheap and it looks pretty good.
