Spare Tire Well Sub Enclosure

joe, i know you did this with your 2 subs and amp comb; fiberglass them in the spare tire well. but i have a few questions:

i have a crystal clear audio setup now, but i am again craving a little bass since i have removed my 2 subs and amp. i am leaning towards something like you have done (fiberglass recess into spare tire area) but with 1 10" rockford fosgate sub and a new amp.

first off, when you fiberglassed your sub in, did you just cut out the sub woofer circle into the wood, lay the trunk board in the trunk and fiberglass it in place to seal it off? did you fiberglass the trunk metal surface under the enclosure too? is this something i could do myself one sunday in my spare time?

for everyone else:

secondly, what do you recommend for an amp to power 1 fosgate punch 1 sub that would actually last? my rockford punch amp died after 1 year's use so i need a new one. i need a new power wire too. what gauge should i get? i have the fuse still, so i could reconnect it to the new power wire and wire it up. i have all of the other wiring for the amp (ground, audio, b+, speaker). i just want a clean installation that will sound good and last.

thanks for the help ahead of time.

No I didn't fiberglass underneath, since I may decide to rip it out one day. A 1/4 board with the speaker hole cut out was laid over the spare tire well and fiberglassed into place. Then, the trunk carpet was laid back over it and the hole cut through that as well. The wire was ran before the board was laid in. Pretty simple and straight foward. I ran 2 10" JL's.

As far as the amp goes, pick something that's gonna run at about 80-100% if the power the speaker can handle and adjust the gain accordingly so the bass comes in at the right time with the rest of the sound. The lower the gain the better, it's easier on the amp.

As far as power and ground, simply choose something based on the output of the amp. 4 gauge is big enough to allow room to grow later on, so that's what I would suggest.

sounds good and clears some stuff up, thanks. i have all the wiring except the battery power wire and it all runs neatly with some slack into the spare tire well. i have some ideas on how to make a really clean installation.

where did you get your fiberglass resin? lowes/ home depot/ wal mart?

this sounds like a fun little project.

i was looking at a rear seat delete sub box enclosure:

they are kind of pricey though, so i will hold off a while- at least til i get my tax return. i like having trunk utility and weight savings.

Rear-seat sub kit

Hi all.

I just removed the back seat in my '96 convertible to rewire the whole audio system, and it occurred to me that you could make a custom seat-bottom with subwoofer openings and some kind of acoustically transparent seating surface.

Can somebody post a link to the rear-seat-delete sub setup you're talking about?

Thanks!
