Gauge Cluster lightning

Well, after reading over some turtorials and reading other's work on this, I decided I am gonna try to change the color of my Gauge Cluster to Red. If I am not able to get a good color due to the green overlay, then I will go the more accomplished route of blue lighting.

I am follow this guide: How to Install LED lights in your Mustang Gauge Cluster

I ordered one Red WLED-x5 LED Wide Angle LED bulb from https://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html to test it out. Hopefully it will be here by the end of this week or the beggining of next week.

As always, I will take alot of pics and be a detailed as I can for everyone here. I know this is a hot topic with alot of different information running around.

Why? Red car, red interior trim, red lighting... hehe

Thats why I only ordered one bulb to see how it looks before ordering all 5 for the cluster... once I find a color that works I am gonna get 3 more for the HVAC as well. I also saw that the shifter uses the same type bulb for the gear light... might change that as well.

So I tried putting the bulb in today. The only problem was that there was no way the LED was gonna fit in the socket or the opening on the back of the cluster. Everywhere I look it says that the bulbs in the cluster at 194. This bulb is suppose to replace 194 and 168 but there was no way it was going to fit...

any idea what to do at this point? I bought the right bulb... but it does not fit?

I think I got it... the write up is for a 98 Cobra and the 99-04 have the same FACTORY size, but when replacing with a LED you need the 74-xHP (x bein the color, G for Greem R for Red ect.).

Numerous people on the guide made commets saying thats the bulbs they had to get for their 2000 GT 2004 GT, ect. Pics in a min.

As you can see, major difference.

Im ordering a Red and Blue 74-xHP3 SMD blub and gonna test them out. I really want Red to match the car, but Blue will prolly end up bein the cake because of that Green tint. They say blue bulbs give the 99-04s a aqua like color.

*pray for red to work(

Can't wait to see pics......Hey, let me know if you figure out how to access the bulb that lights up the gear shift indication window. I've wanted to change that one to blue in my car for awhile to match my blue dash. For the life of me I haven't been able to get to that bulb w/out being scared I'd break something. I've had all of the trim off (all thats easy) but can't get the bulb wtf

So please tell if you change yours!

Well....

I got the new bulbs in. Blue makes it come out a aqua color and red comes out red acually. The only problem is that they do not seem very bright. I mean, you can read the numbers and all... but its a dim light. Maybe its because I just had one bulb and all 5 would work together to light everything up....

But even one was dim right above where it was lighting up. The kind I bought are the brightest LEDs that will work in our clusters...

Dont know what I am gonna do.

Is it a white L.E.D, or a colored L.E.D?

Colored. I ordered a Red and a Blue. The cluster most deff has a green tint behind it since the blue comes out aquaish. The Red comes out red, just dim.

I heard a guy on another forum saying that he has the same issue. It seems like this mod only makes the gauges brighter if you use the white LED. It seems to just have a brighter output (obviously).

Can you remove the green film? That would allow more of the red light to shine through. Id def try putting all the bulbs in though. The lighting is setup to spread throughout the cluster so you might get a brighter light with all the bulbs in.

Well, if I use white bulbs im just gonna get a green light which would be counter productive

I heard of people getting the green off, but that would require taking the cluster very far apart. I would have to take the guage face off. I REALLY can't afford to mess up the needles tho. Last time I did anything with a guage face I seriously fucked up my cluster and had to send it to a 3rd party company yo get re calibrated.

I found this...

How-To: Remove Film From Gauge Cluster (Red or Purple/UV LEDS) - SRT Forums - SRT4, SRT6, SRT8, SRT10 & Dodge Forum

Maybe I could try that. I would not need to move the needles I don't think.
